Ex-Arsenal winger Marc Overmars will be coming out of retirement to play for Dutch side Go Ahead Eagles next season.
The 35-year-old Ernst-born winger had been working as the Eagles’ technical director since retiring from football in July 2004.
He was a member of the Ajax team that won the European Cup in 1995 against A.C. Milan. However, soon after the final, he suffered a serious right knee injury in 1996, which kept him out of Euro 96.
Despite his injury, Overmars was signed by Arsène Wenger’s Arsenal in the summer of 1997 for ?5.5 million (pictured).
Overmars, who has been a Go Ahead Eagles board member for technical affairs since 2005, impressed during a testimonial match for defender Jaap Stam in Zwolle two weeks ago.
“That was also surprising for me, that is was so easy and that I still have my pace,”
“I retired four years ago and since then I train only once a week. But willpower helps a lot.
Nicknamed “The Roadrunner”, Overmars spent the majority of his career playing for Ajax, Arsenal and Barcelona. With Ajax, he won the Champions League in 1995.
