
Leading up to Arsenal’s Champions League clash with Steve McClaren’s FC Twente side, Gooner Talk have put together ten facts on the Eredivisie giants.
1. Twente are currently rebuilding their stadium which means they will have to play the match in Vitesse Arnhem’s stadium - the Gelredome (pictured).
2. The infamous You’ll Never Walk Alone song is loudly sung along in the whole stadium before every kick-off.
3. Last season, Twente beat Amsterdam Tournament hosts Ajax in fourth-placed play-offs which earned them a place in this year’s Champions League qualifying round.
4. ‘The Tukkers’ sold their star midfielder and skipper Orlando Engelaar to German side Schalke earlier this summer.
5. Some of Twente’s past players who are now some of Europe’s biggest footballing names include Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink, Andy van der Meyde, John Bosman and former Spurs boss Martin Jol.
6. Blaise Kufo was the Reds top goalscorer last season bagging 22 goals, the Swiss international has been Twente’s top scorer for an amazing five seasons.
7. Twente were runners up in the 2006 Intertoto Cup and claimed their first KNVB Cup (Dutch version of FA Cup) in 2001.
8.After beating Juventus in the semi-final of the UEFA Cup, Twente lost to German side Borussia Mönchengladbach in the 1973 semi-final .
9. Once complete, Twente’s stadium stadium capacity will be increased to a more sufficient 24,353 seats, this is expected to be finished by the end of next month.
10.As we said above, the player to watch our for is Blaise Kufo, a big, powerful striker with a lethal shot, Twente’s attacking threat could prove a problem to Arsenal’s weak defence.
