Southampton’s on-loan winger Ryan Smith has likened the team’s style of play to that of Premier League giants Arsenal.

The 22-year-old is on-loan at St Mary’s from Millwall but started his career under the guidance of Gunners boss Arsene Wenger.

Smith told the Daily Echo:

“At Arsenal we played 4-4-2, but the football was the same. The players moved around and no one really other than the defence stayed in their position.”

The youngster has also praised the approach of Saints boss Jan Poortvliet and says the squad are determined to succeed.

“It has been nothing but positive (at Southampton),” he added, “from the football to the mentality and the spirit.

“My first impression of the club as a whole is that it’s a great, fantastic club. The way Southampton play football and the standard of the players is so impressive.”

Smith is expected to be included in the Southampton squad for this weekend’s game with Coventry.
