Gooner Talk can exclusively reveal that Arsene Wenger has refused to deny the consistent rumours concerning Russia forward Andrey Arshavin.

Zenit St Petersberg star Arshavin has attracted an array of admiring clubs on the strength of two spectacular Euro 2008 performances against Sweden and the Netherlands, Arsenal are said to be one of them.

French tactician Wenger admitted on French TV that he doesn’t have £40 million to spend in the January transfer window, but surprisingly revealed what positions he’s looking to strengthen in and also answered a question about Arshavin.

Wenger, speaking to Canal + said:

“I start feeling the crisis but I can’t spend £40m. We are looking at a creative player and another midfielder.”

When asked about the Arshavin link, Wenger replied with a coy smile and answer.

“Be a little patient. From the moment you give a name, you remove 50% chance of success to sign him.”

Whilst talking to British broadcaster Sky Sports, once again the Arsenal boss remained secretive on his January transfer plans.

You can watch the interview with Sky here.

Zenit St Petersberg star Arshavin has attracted an array of admiring clubs on the strength of two spectacular Euro 2008 performances against Sweden and the Netherlands.

It seems Arshavin is destined to be the replacement for Cesc Fabregas after the Spaniard sustained a long-term knee injury that will keep him out for four months.

With thanks to Vince from ASCFR for the French TV quotes and JD for the Canal + link.

Where’s your explosive news story? huh?

Nice work Chris.

load of bollocks, we need a centre back, and after today if wenger doesn’t feel we need a striker i’m baffled. adebayor sucked, bendtner sucked more.

AndyMcPhail
Guest

yes we really need a centre back too, forgot about that.

Upson?

1! Joe! Pff, mate, it was terrible. I am a translator of a Hungarian newspaper, and I translated 4-5 articles a day, it was awful… and we were waiting and waiting… I don’t wish this for anyone. 😀

thing with Arshavin is that he is cup tied for the Champs League. Not cool.

Looks like sumin is going on for sure. I would be very happy for him to be bought.Today we lacked attackers.bender has gotta go! arshavin and nasri on wings then when we get walcott, rosicky, eduardo and fab back we have a serious attack options. Inler, cana, alonso in the dm and a big lad at the back and we are sorted. Also buy given for goal.

we have a striker coming thank you, world class at that. You may remeber him, he was injured in March

Arshavin and Joe Ledley to come

Wenger didnt say be patient on arshavin, he said be patient with signings.

he’s not gonna pay 20m for arshavin anyway, lads almost 28, unproven in the prem. If he does i’d b shocked and lose confidence in his transfers – reyes was a disaster when we easily couldve got defoe for half the price.

Martijn Stolze

no way Arshavin will replace Cesc, Nasri/Diaby wil go to Cesc’s place like today and Arshavin will go to
AM or winger.

John

I reckon hes gonna buy semir stilic as creative player. I would be amazed if Wenger buys Arshavin.

Arshavin is a drugged-up waste of money. His performancers are erratic and there are persistent rumours about his fitness. We don’t need another striker. We do need a commanding centre-back, a decent winger (in the absence of Walcott and Rosicky), and a central enforcer – although Denilson deserves far more credit than he’s being given by most Arsenal fans because he’s been putting in some excellent and hard working performances.

Chet, eduardo’s done his hamstring and he will need a lot, a LOT of time to get back to being razor sharp like he was, he shouldnt have any pressure on him and should take his time. Vela is our other most ruthless striker and is still learning his trade.

so we DO need to sign a striker. Adebayor van persie and bendtner just arent ruthless enough

John
Guest

Adebayor will get better and so will bendtner as well as vela. Its just our lack of width and a guy in midfield who does not give the ball away. We need a hleb type player dribble under pressure.

what about yaya toure?? doesn’t anybody translate anything on the spanish reports that say we’re negotiating with barca??? there’s an exclusive!!!

Dont get it twisted the boss might be talking abt being patient and see if he can get another bendtner or another sucker

athlon

Why does Yaya want to leave the Barca now?

have faith arsene knows ,arshavin looks born to play for arsenal creates and scores goals and has experience something we lack right now, think he will sign another midfielder too .go on arsene save our season

yeaaa just better hope to god n pray that the creative player he wants isn’t CHARLES N’ZOGBIA…………………………………………………..

There’s two sides to this story.

First of all, the boss could be trying to divert our attention onto Arshavin so we get someone else.

Or, we could be buying Arshavin in January.

Matte
Guest

Well, imagine this: Nasri-defensiv midfielder (Inler maybe)-Cesc-Walcott with Arshavin in a Bergkamp roll in front of this four could be great onces Cesc comes back.

In the summer we need quality up front and in the central defence but the league is gone and we just need to secure the fourth spot this season so Arshavin plus a holding midfielder will probebly do that.

Gareth Priest
Guest

That Wenger coy smile from experience usually means he’s not signing them… but if it’s a smokescreen then great. I hope we buy earlier in Jan. We need it now.

james
Guest

we definitely need a striker Adebayor and Bendtner are a waste of space

his royal dudeness
Guest

he wont sign a forward coz like he has said a million times, he’s happy with his striking options like Eduardo, Van Persie, Adebayor, Bendtner, Vela, plus Walcott is a future striker so there’s absolutely NO CHANCE on a forward, trust me

Arteta would be better value than Arshavin…. Have we scored any free kicks yet this season?

Gooner Dare MKD

Don’t say stupid thing arshavin best position is behind the forwards or left wing he is not striker and if we buy him hi will play left winger nasri will go in middle or right wing.

Bergy

A ball winner.and a creative midfielders wil work for me. I do wonder if rosicky wil ever play again

Tony

arshavin would be brilliant he plays in a arsenal way. he would be a good addition to the squad

i am happy a.wenger is going to spend during january transfer, but i hope we dont have to wait till 31 january deadline.

Bergy
Guest

What is worrying is that we cant seem 2 have a healthy squad, for the last few seasons.think that also has a major impact.any squad wil struggle if 4/5 1st team players are out.

opox

let’s hope he even sign a player
what about alonso

harrison

a6t the moment we have 5 really good players out who make up half of our 1st 11 so in othere words if you took gerard and torres from liverpool they are nothing you take lampard and terry from chelsea they are nothing we are just unlucky and people saying sell adebayor are you mad i don’t see anyone else on that list with 11 goals bendtner should be sold as whenever he plays we hardly create anything and he is piss poor but when ade and RVP or eduardo play upfront we look good we just need a good… Read more »

I think we should Get Daniel Van Buyten in defence. For a holding midfielder we should sign Scott Parker from West ham

Spike

Who ever suggested Arteta is bang on the money IMO!

Younger than Arse shavings and prem quality with no time needed to get used to the league and he’d be about £10 mill cheaper.

Jaaack
Guest

Arshavin and Yaya would do. I doubt it though.

Neil
Guest

I would like Arteta but I don’t think Everton would be willing to sell their best player!

Arshavin and Yaya for me and we’ll be back in the title race

Spike
Guest

Sorry, I just don’t get this clamour for Yaya Toure? He’s as ponderous as Gilberto innit?

Surely there’s gotta be some better options out there? And ones that aint so hyped up asnd otherefore over priced?

DS
Guest

How can you say RVP aint ruthless, his goals vs Chelsea show just how ruthless he can be, he just needs a solid performer with him so they can be dynamic and Adebayor isnt him. Maybe Eduardo can be, If you recall When Eduardo came good RVP struggled with injurys and now its the other way around, they didnt get much time together.

Neil
Guest

Adebayor can fuck off, he was so shit today back to his normal self, knew it wouldnt take long!

Gooner For Life

I guess people were right! Wenger does have a plan…

Trevor
Guest
We do not need a new striker! Yes, Adebayor was awful today, but one of the best strikers in the country is coming back next month, and Van Persie can change a game in a second. Vela will come good, even though Bentdner has been floundering. A “creative player” i.e. winger/playmaker will help us improve our depth and spark, and the “other midfielder” is doubtless an enforcer CM, which we desperately need! I thought Diaby had an excellent game, and always looked dangerous. I really like the lad, and he is tremendously gifted. He just needs to make better decisions… Read more »

this should clear things up but it only says he is after a creative player in the translation here. it says he will eventually have to buy another midfielder so that dont look like he is buyin that defensive one like u lot keep goin on about.
