Zenit Director: "We're waiting for Arsenal response"

arshavin1

Zenit St Petersberg director Maxim Mitrofanov revealed that talks are still progressing with Arsenal over the transfer of Russian playmaker Andrei Arshavin.

The 27-year-old is closing in on his ideal move to the Gunners after several weeks of firm interest from the north London giants. However, Zenit official Mitrofanov admitted that Arsenal are yet to ‘conclude the transfer’

Speaking to Radio Zenit, the official radio station of the Russian giants, Mitrofanov said:

“We are still waiting for an official response Arsenal.

While there is no news [at the moment], we do realise the position of Arsenal is extremely important.

Arsène Wenger said that he has different feelings about the possibility of the deal, but nevertheless, he looked forward to its conclusion.

We need to understand how Arsenal would like to conclude this transfer.”

French tactician Arsene Wenger said last night in his post-match press conference following the 1-1 draw over Everton, that the deal to bring midfielder Andrei Arshavin to the Emirates Stadium is ‘90 per cent completed’.

Earlier this afternoon, Zenit head coach Dick Advocaat refused to get drawn in on the ‘Arshavin-saga’ admitting that he’s “fed up” with the longevity of the transfer.

A deal will certainly need to happen sooner rather than later. With just 4 days left until the closure of the transfer window, late signings could prove crucial to the rest of Arsenal’s season.

Wenger Must Prove His Abilities

wenger_silver

With Wednesday’s last-gasp away draw to Everton, even the most amateur of supporter could see just how lacking in attacking quality the current Arsenal side are. Unfortunately, it appears that Wenger is so blinded by his ‘belief’ in the current squad that a blind man in a fog has more sight than he.

While Everton do not possess the most potent attacking threat, they nevertheless have weapons to use. Fellaini, Pienaar, Arteta, and Cahill all are legitimate attackers in their own right, and for the most part Arsenal’s defense held them at bay.

The problem with this current team is their inability to maintain possession. Indeed, previous teams were accused of contriving to walk the ball into the net, yet currently that would seem beyond this team’s ability to even attempt. While Myles Palmer may believe that Arsenal are a ‘possessive’ team, the truth is that they simply are not.

Our current best uninjured central midfielder, Denilson, was relegated to playing wide right, because Eboue has been woeful and Wenger seems reluctant to play Wilshere out there. Removed of our driving force in the center, it was down to the incredulous Diaby and Song to forge their way through the opposition. If Steven Gerrard and Xabi Alonso can only score 1 goal a game against this Everton side, then those two players sure as hell are not going to get it done. Luckily, we do possess one world-class player in Robin van Persie, and he committed daylight robbery in stealing the points.

What this current team needs, at the bare minimum, is another potent attacker. To be blunt, Arshavin is a must. There can be no excuses for not capturing his services. It is becoming increasingly apparent that the Champions League and the subsequent cash windfall are what at stake. Nasri and van Persie need another partner of guile to partner them.

Adebayor, all 90,000 pounds of him, is not up to the task. Whether his head be in his chequebook, in Barcelona, or up his arse, is hard to determine. His lack of committment is not.

Clichy and Sagna are having massive down seasons compared to last year. As much stick as Clichy got for Hull’s goal, Sagna should get just as much, if not more, for his lackadaisacal defending and inability to close his man down. How you watch a man take a throw-in and subsequently let him cross the ball is a violation of all defending laws.

The only bright light this season has been the form of Robin van Persie. In fact, he has either assisted or scored every Arsenal goal in the month of January. Clearly, his desire is not lacking. It is a shame the same could not be said for Adebayor.

Wenger must do something, right now, to stop the rot. With each passing game, the nightmarish prediction of Arsenal missing out on the Champions League is becoming more and more likely. Recently, Wenger was quoted about his ability to make money for the Club. I wish his dedication to winning football games was the same.

As much as he has done for the Club, he will never lose the responsibility to win football games. Not in a million years. That is his one fundamental task as manager, and currently he is edging ever closer to failure. He surely knows what could be done to save our season, but whether or not he deems it pertinent is another issue altogether.

Match Preview: Everton v Arsenal (Premier League)

Arsenal’s bid to secure a top-four finish faces a stern test when the Gunners head to Goodison Park to take on Everton.

Arsene Wenger’s side are currently fifth in the table and are five points ahead of their opponents, but are three points adrift of fourth-placed Aston Villa – a margin that could be doubled before Arsenal take to the field.

Everton’s lack of fit strikers was expected to see them struggle to maintain their top-four challenge, but boss David Moyes has guided his side to an eight-match unbeaten run in all competitions.

Their last two games have seen them secure back-to-back 1-1 draws at Anfield against Liverpool, with Moyes delighted by the spirit shown among his injury-hit squad.

He commented:

“We’ve had it now for four or five weeks and we could have gone under because we didn’t have any forwards, but they haven’t half mucked in and got around it well.

“The boys at the back have given us that opportunity by keeping clean sheets and defending very well and we have to base ourselves on that until we can get some of the forwards back.”

Moyes still has Yakubu, Louis Saha and James Vaughan all sidelined, but record signing Merouane Fellaini returns after a two-match suspension.

Arsenal were held to a goalless draw by Cardiff City in the fourth round of the FA Cup at the weekend, with the Gunners’ strikers failing to find their shooting boots.

Wenger still has Mikael Silvestre, Theo Walcott and Cesc Fabregas sidelined by injuries, but Gael Clichy should return at left-back after suspension.

“We are very short at the moment and cannot rotate very much,” Wenger admitted after the weekend stalemate. “I could rest a few players today but not as many as I had wanted.”

However, things are not as bad as they may seem for the north London outfit, who are unbeaten in their last eight league games.

Earlier this season Arsenal won 3-1 against the Toffees at the Emirates Stadium, thanks to goals by Samir Nasri, Robin van Persie and Walcott.

Gallas given Gunners start & more on Arshavin

Gallas

Former Arsenal skipper William Gallas is likely to start for the Gunners in tomorrow’s crucial Premier League tie against Everton at Goodison Park.

The 31-year-old French centre half has been missing from the Arsenal side for several weeks due to a niggly hamstring injury.

With Johan Djourou and Kolo Toure, the latter rumoured to of fallen out with Gallas, Gunners boss Arsene Wenger seems reluctant to drop either of them. Despite that, he knows that Arsenal’s congested fixture list will force him to rotate his thin squad.

“Gallas is likely to be involved tomorrow,” said Wenger. “I have not picked the team yet but he will be with us of course.

“It will be at the expense of who it will be. That depends on the games and what kind of opposition we have.”

Gooner Talk have predicted this line-up for tomorrow evening’s match:

Almunia
Sagna – Djourou – Gallas – Clichy
Eboue – Denilson – Diaby – Nasri
Adebayor – van Persie

Of course, Gooner Talk will continue our build-up towards the game with a match preview in the afternoon. A report will be put up shortly after the game by our new report writer, Darius.

arshavin-turn

In other news, Andrei Arshavin’s frustratingly ongoing move to Arsenal has been given some positive news with the quotes of Zenit St Petersberg director Maxim Mitrofanov earlier this afternoon.

Mitrofanov had earlier claimed in a Russian radio interview that a deal had been agreed with Arsenal, but now, according to him, Arshavin has put ‘money over success’.

He said:

“We’ve reached an agreement with Arsenal’s representatives about a different sum for the transfer.

“The amount would have been increased by decreasing the player’s wages, but because the player didn’t budge, neither us nor the Londoners found it possible to sign a contract for the agreed price. This decision was mutual and not just Zenit’s.”

“I think that we are very close to a deal, we really want to sell him but I hope the player can forget about the huge sums of money he is asking for and I hope he can find a compromise,” Mitrotanov.

“We are ready but it is his decision.

“Is it his dream or is it just a question of money?”

Arshavin’s agent Dennis Lachter has rebuffed those quotes whilst speaking to Gooner Talk.

After viewing Mitrofanov’s comments, he admitted that Zenit are ‘blaming’ the slowness of the deal on the player, instead of theirselves.

Cardiff City 0-0 Arsenal

Cardiff produced a superb performance to hold Arsenal to a goalless draw in the FA Cup fourth round at Ninian Park.

The Bluebirds dominated the early stages but wasted good chances, with Ross McCormack, Joe Ledley and Paul Parry all failing to hit the target.

Nicklas Bendtner wastefully headed over for Arsenal late in the first half.

Emmanuel Adebayor scuffed a great chance as Arsenal improved after the break, though McCormack did clip the Arsenal crossbar with a free-kick.

Cardiff were hanging on in the latter stages of the game but they fully deserved to take the tie to a replay.
