Your Reaction: Eduardo gets 2 match ban

 Eduardo

UEFA have announced that Arsenal frontman Eduardo has been banned for ‘deceiving the referee’ during last weeks Champions League clash with Celtic.

The Gunners’ CEO Ivan Gazidis gave his opinion a few days ago on Eduardo’s supposed dive, something that many fans seem to agree with.

“I think that if you have had an injury like that it’s fairly natural that you might want to avoid significant contact.”

Arsenal can appeal against the decision within a 3-day deadline.

    Chris,
Can you create a Goonertalk post to specifically discuss how video refereeing could be implemented? I strongly believe it is possible.

The proposed post would be to discuss how it might be implemented and NOT whether or not it should. That is a seperate debate.

Here is the goal: Implement a system of video review which will have NO impact on the flow of the game as it exists today. NONE. The system will ELIMINATE controversy stemming from refereeing decisions made in error.

    Sample proposal:

    1. Video referee sits watching a monitor, is connected to on pitch referee and his assistants via current headset system.

    2. On pitch ref makes a call, players disagree, team A captain says, ‘review’, on pitch referee says ‘review’, video ref says a) correct call, b) reverse call, c) inconclusive, call stands. In the case of a) and c), team A loses option to request further reviews in that half. In the case of b), team A retains option for further reviews in that half.

    3. The on pitch referee would have the authority to deny a review so as to eliminate the trivial.

    4. There should be a time limit of 60 seconds for reviews.

guys i think its high time someone told platini that arsene is not arsenal this “witch-hunt” as arsene put it is the first time that platini actually used his office to get back at wenger. last year he called him in as many words a paedophile. previously, it took his father(platini’s)to settle their spat. arsenal should watch this i have an unsettling feeling that this is a first of many. what did wenger do to platini? make love to his mother? i mean Gerrad so blatantly dived last season against atletico madrid to win a penalty there was’nt that much of an outcry, divers CR7 and ROONey do the same and get away with it. someone had better warn platini to watch himself or he’ll wake up one morning and see only demons.

Eduardo’s dive is hardly as significant as Babel’s dive that cost us advancement in the CL in 07-08. We all dislike diving but this is hardly the type of dive to set the precedent for future rulings. Now every dive should result in a 2 match ban? I don’t think so

    • Patrick says:

Qualify that as any dive that is not caught by the referee and is subsequently referred to UEFA by a recognized body. Note that UEFA will not investigate unless asked to.

      • Patrick says:

CLARIFICATION: UEFA’s president or general secretary has the right to investigate where they see fit. Since the only two investigations were instigated by SFA complaints, it does appear that UEFA doesn’t care to instigate an investigation themselves. There is nothing stopping them though.

    What a joke!!
Where does that leave the Rooneys, Drogbas, Ronaldos etc,? Eduardo has never dived before. Do they remember that just over a year ago, Eduardo suffered a most horrific career threatening injury? Has any of them even thought about how frightening someone the size of Boruc hurling his full body weight at the leg of someone the size of Eduardo, would be? especially bearing in mind his previous injury. I know I would get clean out of the way and with the speed at which they were both travelling towards each other, the safest way to do that was what Eduardo did! I have never seen Eduardo dive since he has been at Arsenal. Surely his track record should account for something.
For me Eduardo is a hero for having the mental strength to play football the way he is after that horrible injury! A lesser man would be afraid to swing a leg at a sockball!
UEFA, remember…you have set the precedent, be prpared for the consequences. Be prepared to hand out 2,3,5 match bans on a weekly basis. The only way to avoid that is to admit your error and admit it was a witch hunt against Arsenal and save yourselves. …..And we all know that will not happen! so now, as the saying goes…you have opened a can of worms!! Congratulations.

Double standards…so if eduado is banned 2 games for just one dive wat will ever happen to real divers (CR7,drobgas,roonies, babel , gerard oh the list goes on …) will they ever play in the CL again ..? UEFA wat a joke

  6. [...] and media have gone to even greater length in defending the Brazilian-born Croatia striker, who has won the hearts and sympathy of his adopted country after recovering from a horrific leg break he suffered in Arsenal’s Premier League match at Birmingham in February [...]

I hope arsenal and Wenger appeal this decision immediately without looking back. Its no suprise that Wenger reacted the way he did because he has been one of the proponents of introducing video technology in football which has fallen on deaf years over the years, only for uefa to jump on this case, which to me is an isolated case. (unjust)

The referees decision has always known to be final, but not in this case. Hence, uefa needs to take a definite stand to either introduce video technology or not. In the event they do, it will great for football and in this case, I will not care how much ban eduardo gets , even if its 10 games.

In the event they dont, then they should go to hell with this eduardo incident because its biased and unobjective.

I think arsenal is going about this the right way having released a statement of intent on arsenal.com which reads thus,
We have been informed that we will receive a “reasoned decision” from Uefa by Thursday of this week. Once we receive Uefa’s rationale, we will make a decision on the next steps.

We have been deeply frustrated by the perfunctory and apparently arbitrary process that Uefa has followed in this instance. We believe it is imperative that Uefa’s explanation for its decision provides clear and comprehensive standards that will be consistently enforced. It is also critical that Uefa provides specific details of the processes it plans to adopt in reviewing all games under its jurisdiction.

Finally, this statement puts pressure on uefa to rid itself of bias and take a definite stand which is what’s needed in this case

that i so wrong to do that to a player hes a nice guy a great player he broke his leg, im going to go to platini’s house, and break that ass’s leg see how he likes it. eduardo did not dive he tried to get out of the way so he dosnot injure him self again

  9. I was curious if anyone knew anything about these professional sports ? I am considering signing up for this sports handicapping service. It looks pretty promising and its backed by a clickback guarantee which means your going to get your money back if you don’t like the system or it simply doesn’t work. Has anyone tried a system like this?
