Report & Highlights: Arsenal 1-0 Wolverhampton

Arsenal scored at the death against ten-men Wolves at the Emirates to cut the gap on league leaders Chelsea to three points.

The home side showed no signs of fatigue after their Champions League clash against Barcelona in midweek, with Theo Walcott picking up where he left off against the Spanish champions by running early proceedings against Wolves. The Arsenal winger was a constant thorn in Wolves’ side throughout the opening quarter of an hour, picking out Eduardo only for the striker to send an effort straight at Marcus Hahnemann, before playing in Bacary Sagna, who found his attempt similarly thwarted by the in-form Wolves keeper.

Arsenal started the second half looking like a team on a mission and Alex Song and Eduardo missed decent chances shortly after the break to put the home side ahead. Rosicky and Walcott once again found themselves creating the majority of the chances for Arsenal but Wolves continued to hang on in there and frustrate the London side.

Wolves’ task to keep an attack-minded Arsenal at bay was made even more difficult after 66 minutes, when Karl Henry picked up a red card for a lunge at Rosicky. A red card may have been a slightly harsh decision for what was a mistimed challenge but Arsenal made the most of their numerical advantage and continued to surge forward in numbers, with Rosicky forcing another decent save from Hahnemann just minutes after the sending off.

Wolves’ best chance of the game came from a corner, with the ball deflecting off the head of Sol Campbell and forcing Rosicky to clear off the line. As the game drew to a close, it seemed like Wolves were going to pick up the most unlikely point of the season at the Emirates, especially when Walcott missed a clear-cut chance from an injury time corner. However, in the final minute of the game, substitute Nicklas Bendtner made the most of an inch-perfect cross from Sagna, heading the ball past a helpless Hahnemann and sending the home fans into raptures.

  4. You have to applaud the balls this team have! The amount of times we’ve pulled the rabbit out of the hat this season has been immense, despite our considerable injury problems and constant shit from the dick-headed media (Martin Samuel, Guillem Balague and Graham Hunter excepted)we are somehow still in the title race and Champions League. Unfortunately, we are up against it in both competitions, and we need to win all our remaining games in the League if we are to have a chance of winning it. I really hope we don’t live to rue those late slip-ups away against West Ham and Birmingham and our 4 losses against the Mancs and Chavs. Let’s keep fighting!!!

    What a relief!!
Dont you think, our team has worked so hard to produce, 7 wins out of 8. It could have been 8, phew. Anyways!! They have worked their ass off. And really done well to be on the title race still, even though as an outsider till now. But who knows, 5 games and 15 points. Lets see what happens.

I sometimes reflect on our season.
Wish Diaby had not scored such a easy goal for ManU.
Wish Aluminia hadnt run to get the ball that Rooney never could have taken.
wish Aluminia had done better to keep Birmingham ball out.
Wish that West ham freekick was never given, and that penalty too.
    Past is past.

But we ve done well till now. We need a final push. And hope Nasri, and Diaby, and Rosicsky, and Denilson, and Campbell can step up.
Lets just pray that Chelsea and Manchester United tumble more. It would be such a sweet sweet season. But I am still happy with the players attitude.

5 more to go, I believe we can do it.

Fantastic stuff today…Been really proud to be a gooner this year! Regardless of whether we win something or not I am confident that we are going in the right direction and with a couple of additions in the right areas we will continue this fight and challenge next year and for years to come…

Just a point about Theos performance today. I really feel for him and this negative press backlash he gets. I have seen it today from the likes of Phil Thompson, ESPN and FOX. Today he was a constant threat to wolves’ backline. Ask yourselves this if the 3 or 4 chances he served up on a plate in the first half had found the net he would have been hailed as a hero today. It was only his 5th or 6th start of the season and i though he done very well..

    COME ON YOU GOONERS!!!

At some point, my heart will not be able to take it. But Bendtner, we are eternally grateful.

By the by, Kevin Palmer of espn soccernet is getting slaughtered by Arsenal fans. Do join in. He deserves it completely. And it really is quite fun.

I am really proud of the boys today. We showed so much passion and desire to win. We never gave up and it was the result we deserved. I did think wenger should of swapped eboue with walcott and taken walcott off earlier, it wasn’t his day at all.

Great win, lets keep it up ;)

I have no idea what is up with the attendances at the stadium, but i was at the barca game and they said there was 59 something thousand there, but i didnt see hardly any spare seats. And today, much more spare seats and they said there was more than 60 thousand. weird.

We need to be more confident in front of goal posts. We can’t afford to miss chances against Barca. However, We’ll win 2 – 1. First goal Rosicky Second Nasri

So pretty comments today, I agree with you today, our desire, passion, commitment, discipline and proud left on the pitch. So, so, so tough game, because Wolves played for keeping a nil-nil and they made a very poor game, and fortunately for us, we had that deserved goal, very worthly. Although we will keep 3rd, we don’t lose our pace and Chelski played for our interests…
    Walcott, Rosicky, Eboue & Sagna = 8
    Song, Vermaelen & Campbell = 7,5
    Almunia, Eduardo, Silvestre & Denilson = 7
Hahnemann = 9 (star player today)
    All Wolves = 5
    Wenger = 8
    Nasri, Vela & Bendtner = 7
