Report & Highlights: Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 Arsenal

Danny Rose hit a wonder-goal on his Premier League debut as Tottenham overcame Arsenal 2-1 in the North London derby at White Hart Lane.

Harry Redknapp handed the 19-year-old winger his first start in the league and his decision paid off when he hit a 30 yard volley past Manuel Almunia to give Spurs a half-time lead.

Wales youngster Gareth Bale made it 2-0 immediately after the break to stun Arsenal, but the introduction of Robin van Persie revived the Gunners with Nicklas Bendtner pulling a goal back late on.

Arsenal’s Starting XI & Subs

Almunia
Sagna – Campbell – Vermaelen – Clichy
Nasri – Denilson – Diaby
Eboue – Bendtner – Rosicky

Subs: Fabianski, Silvestre, Eastmond, Merida, Walcott, Eduardo, van Persie.

Victory would have taken Arsene Wenger’s side above Manchester United, however the defeat leaves them six points adrift of Chelsea and looks to have effectively ended their title dreams.

Arsenal began the game brightly and won an early corner from which Campbell had a fumbled effort cleared off the line by Benoit Assou-Ekotto.

The home side took the lead after ten minutes though when Almunia’s punched clearance fell to Rose, who smashed a glorious 30 yard volley over the stranded Arsenal goalkeeper.

And Arsenal’s problems soon began to mount when Thomas Vermaelen was forced off with an injury and replaced by Mikael Silvestre.

Bendtner had a golden opportunity to level the scores when he was played through by Tomas Rosicky but his first touch was poor and he dragged his shot wide of the post.

Arsenal continued to dominate possesion, but they struggled to create with Tottenham’s midfield giving them little time and space.

And Spurs almost scored a second before half-time after a quick break put Luka Modric through on goal, only for Almunia to rush off his line and deny the Croatian.

The Arsenal goalkeeper could do nothing to prevent Bale doubling the home sides lead immediately after the break though when Jermain Defoe picked out the Welshman who slid a cool finish inside the post.

Arsene Wenger introduced Theo Walcott in response but he had little joy down the right as Arsenal continued to struggle to get in behind the Tottenham defence.

Van Persie brought a cutting edge to Arsenal’s play in the final 20 minutes on his comeback from injury.

He was twice denied by Gomes but the Dutchman laid on a vital pass for Walcott to cross into the box where Bendtner was waiting to slide the ball into the goal and ensure a nervous finish for Spurs.

Tottenham managed to hold on though for their first victory over Arsenal in the league in 20 attempts.

He doesn’t look half the player when Song’s not in the team. I think that’s to do with the balance. Last night for example we had no real pace or out ball in the first half, so S**** could press us higher up the pitch. Taken in conjunction with the fact that that neither Diaby or Denilson are ball winners and it doesn’t help. Buying a backup to Song in the transfer window is, in my opinion, as urgent as a new Centre Back.

Damn it, just so damn frustrated at yesterday’s defeat. There HAS to be some serious changes next summer. @ Arsenal B. yeah agreed. Diably is amazing. All these players have potential, but i don’t know whats wrong. They just pass.pass.pass. loose possession. Just too slow. Its either they are not good, or there is something wrong with the coaching staff or maybe they are pressurized to play the “arsenal way”

    @ summer changes. my team

Keeper- Fabianski/ Almunia. lol. NO WAY. get rid of them. sign someone good. eg: Joe Hart ( if possible )

RB: Sagna ( good crosses, better than eboue. Eboue has 0 vision. crap player. good as a substitute. gives energy)

CB: Vermalen ( of course. been awesome )

CB: Someone tall, strong, young, GOOD. Skrew gallas. looser bloody, doesnt even like playing for arsenal. silvestre. (omg. SKrew him) KEEP campbell. he is awesome. give him another year. i like his mentality. Djorou,Sendores. keep/sell. i dont know whats gna happen to sendores. Cnt say anything though. wenger’s call

LB: Clichy. We got so many LB’s no need for a new one. and all are pretty good. traore crossed that exquisite ball to walcott against aston villa. and gibbs is there too

Fabregas – He goes. This club will fall apart. He will go i know he will. but not now. Maybe when he’s lyk 28 or something. But Barca want him baad. Xavi’s 30 now. soo…. hmm

    Midfield.

    Keep
    SONG
    FABREGAS
    DIABLY
    NASRI
    ARSHAVIN
    WALCOTT
    FRAN MERIDA
    .
SELL – ROSICKY – hes old and not even THAT good.

    FORWARDS.
    SELL – EDUARDO.
    loan – vela & Bentner.
BUY – hes gna buy CHAMAKH. ( akh. another so.so player.) Id lyk someone good along side van persie.

    VERDICT. Next season.

    New keeper
    New CB’s
Sell Eduardo, gallas, silvestre, and players which aren’t gna become world class. stop being pretentious.
    New forwards

    SPEND MONEY ARSENE. PLEASE.

Wow, a lot of deluded and hateful comments so far. Re Diaby: He seemed more up for it when Van Persie came on…maybe he thrives of Robin’s ability I dont really know but thats what it looks like to me. Everyone was expecting him to be the next Vieira because he was french and had long legs. For me, his best position is in behind the striker. The away game at Fernebache comes to mind. He played behind Adebayor and played a blinder. Re The title: realisticly its over and thats that.

its all about mentality and who wenger brings in this summer to fire the team up. it must be at least 3 players with the hunger and desire as sol/vermaelen to carry the team when they are down. and the current players who seem to always be passengers with cocky attitudes must be loaded off, sell or whatever but get them out of arsenal. next year is the final verdict. tweak the team this summer because if the project fails next month, its a complete overhaul coming in 2011.

OK, our beloved team has resigned all the chances to win the League one more time….so, our Hospital Team will play remaining 5 games with all bench players…and we will see winning Chel$$$ki the Double. Maybe we will win some trophy before the end of the world (announced by 2012…). Meanwhile, I will expect a great WC with our (available) players in their national sides. And next season we hope that Arsenal Board invest some money to buy a GK, a CB, a DM and a striker…

Haha all you’ve done is name players who are good on footie manager. I doubt you have ever seen: Sakho, veloso or hazard actually play.
And why would we sign them, our squad is crying out for some experience and they are all under 23.
Also, why would we spend £32 million on a couple of youngsters, as if wenger would pay that amount of money for those players.
And no it’s not simple, if we made those signings we would get completely over run in the league (due to a lack of experience) and have wasted money in the transfer market

andrew, tart you all are some of the stupidest fans a club could possibly have; andrew have YOU actually seen any of those players play, if you don’t know who they are then shut the fuck up and don’t comment cause you just came off like a retard with that non-sense, other then sacko those are all game changing players and do we really need injury-prone old timers, do you actually play football? Cause pace and technical ability are the 2 most important qulaities for our system, young players provide that, oldies really don’t. Now tart, I hope you were joking about Sergio Ramos, he’s not a CB hes a right-back and he doesn’t defend so you should really hold off on that comment until you actually see him play in real life, he’s deffinnitely the worst player on the Spanish squad and he costs Real goals all the time cause he doesn’t track back. To reiterate, andrew you sir are an idiot and your opinion is worthless because you’re obviously ignorant in all things football, you’re probably one of the deuchbags that were calling to get rid of Arshavin when he had a couple off games

    @ilya:

In what way was anything I said idiotic? Eden Hazard and Veloso wouldn’t improve our team at all. We have all the technical ability a club could want we just need some added steel. That doesnt mean spending a fortune in the transfer market by the way.

And I did see Veloso and Eden Hazard play in the Europa league this season when sporting played everton and lille played liverpool…you know because I actually watch football… and they both looked fairly skillful and tidy players, but wouldn’t fair any better than what we already have.

What part did I say we needed injury prone old timers? I believe I used the word `experience `, look it up mate, there’s a difference.

Finally, I never said that we should get rid of Arshavin, why would you even say that I said that? It’s pathetic, childish and proves that you are a complete moron, and a very sad person who thinks its funny to have a go at people from the comfort of their keyboard.
Bet your a right woose in everyday life

yesterday shows how ridiculous our lack of bolstering has become. wenger can go on about how many great players we have but they have shown again and again they cant stay fit. if its not one its the other, etc. until we have a striker that other teams truly fear, we will not win a title. rvp is great but he is not a true striker. bendtner is okay is a sub. chelsea – drogba, barcelona – messi, man u – rooney, inter – eto’o, what is so hard to see here?

just because we score goals against the crap teams doesnt belie the fact we WASTE tons of opportunities. sack up arsene and sign david villa, or someone who can truly score.

also, lets sign a central defender or TWO so that our combined age pairing isnt 100+ again.

finally, a keeper. almunia sucks, face it.

hey, arsene, injuries are a part of the game and they happen every year – that is why you need a truly solid squad so that in march and april you are playing quality instead of crap. hence henry and toure cant even get a game at barca and we field teams with silvestre, eastmond, etc.

Denilson got to go, he is good, but not made for english football. Bring in strong leg-breaker with pasing ability(cover for song). Fabregas can leave for all i care, has anyone seen him play a decent game against a good team (chelsea, utd, Barca etc) I sure haven`t. Not enough to dominate against Wigan. Goalkeeper a must, defender a must, Strikers a must. Eduardo, denilson, silvestre, sagna, eboue, almunia, senderos, fabiansky can also call time on their arsenal careers.

If each and every of our player stays completely fit for the entire next season, we can win without selling or buying anyone in summer.

BUT. the squad is so not world class. Barcelona raped us from everywhere. We always seem the better team (against tottenham) but pass, pass, pass and all their players are behind. Need to be quick, fast and agile. I feel walcott should start. He gives the team something special.

Get Henry back for another season. he’s on a free transfer i heard. Get someone good as a keeper. sell almunia. Get a strong defender. AND some talented striker.

    =). still, arsenal 4 lyf
