Gallas goal gets chalked off in France defeat

France lost 1-0 to China in their final warm-up match before the start of the World Cup in South Africa.

Deng Zhuo Xiang scored the winning goal in the 68th minute with a swerving free kick from 25 yards.

The result dealt a blow to France’s confidence as the 2006 World Cup finalists have conceded a goal in each of their last three friendlies while scoring just twice.

Les Bleus drew 1-1 with Tunisia last weekend and beat Costa-Rica 2-1 last month. Raymond Domenech’s side open their World Cup campaign against Uruguay on June 11, before taking on Mexico and host South Africa in Group A.

China failed to qualify for the World Cup and were missing several regular starters.

William Gallas (8)- Played 90 minutes – Could have scored a hattrick and was Les Bleus’ main threat on set pieces.

Bacary Sagna (6) – Played 45 minutes – Astute performance from the Gunners fullback. Was one of the better French defenders on the day.

Abou Diaby (7) - Played 22 minutes – Likely to have a big impact for France in the World Cup. Came on and impressed once again, playing in a supporting striker role.

@Matt: That’s quite a bold prediction mate. You’re probably right though; France haven’t looked like a threat for quite a while now.

He is clearly offside. There is only one man behind him as he is behind the keeper. Therefore offside.

Offside rule clearly states there must be two players between the goal and the opposing player when the ball is kicked. Thing is everyone forgets the goalie counts so use the defender as the only player necessary. However you can clearly see that when Anelka taps it on, there is only the defender on the line, thus gallas is offside.

There have to be two (incl. goalie) defenders between the goal and Gallas

He is clearly offside because in the offside rule, ANY PLAYER BEHIND THE GOALKEEPER DOES NOT COUNT.

@chris: The reason its offside is that the defender on the line is like a goalkeeper and the goalheeper becomes like the defender if you get me.

Why do we still speak of Gallas as an Arsenal player? He clearly isn’t going to be here next season. Instead he’ll be wasting his time ploughing his trade in the French league for little bit of extra cash.

Guys, it IS an offside. The definition of offside position is that the player is nearer to his opponents’ goal line than both the ball and the NEXT TO LAST opponent. In other words, there needs to be two players, one of which is usually the goalkeeper but not in this case.

ah, I was confused at first but I understand now

in the offside rule, when the attacker has to be level or behind the defender, its actually an official rule that there has to be two defenders ahead of the attacker which usually includes the goalkeeper.

gallas here was behind the keeper when the ball which was played by his team mate, anelka, and only had 1 defender between him and the goal. It was an offside offence. If the keeper was level or on the line ahead of gallas, or if the defender has knocked the ball onto gallas, it would be onside
