Which Arsenal side would you field on Wednesday?

Arsenal could have been forgiven for wanting an easy time of things in the fourth round of the Carling Cup after their fantastic 4-1 victory over arch-rivals Spurs in the last round.

There was no such luck for Arsene Wenger’s side though, as they pulled Premier League new-boys Newcastle United out of the hat for their last 16 tie.

A similar Gunners side to the one that beat Spurs is expected to be named on Wednesday, consisting mainly of first team regulars and fringe players.

“We will go for every single competition this season with all the possible resources we have,” said Arsene Wenger at last week’s AGM.

“We will play a strong team at Newcastle. I am not saying Cesc will definitely play, because he is only just back from a hamstring injury and we have to be cautious.”

Gooner Talk’s Predicted Starting XI against Newcastle

Fabianski
Eboue – Koscielny – Squillaci – Gibbs
Diaby – Denilson – Rosicky
Walcott – Bendtner – Vela

What would be your ideal starting XI for Wednesday’s game? Should the likes of Jay-Emmanuel Thomas and Henri Lansbury be rewarded for their performances in the Gunners’ second string? Or is experience necessary if Arsenal are seriously targeting the Carling Cup this season?

Diaby has an ankle problem and Lansbury, Szczesny deserve a chance
Squillaci have been playing all the games since vermaelen injury so he deserves a break and djourou needs game time
JET should also get a chance but I guess vela is ahead of him

I wont expect much change in the squad to help its balance. However, MC, SS and posibly AS shl be rested alongside SF. We shld then hav NB, JET and posibly HL and b4 i forget, LK should start too.

I would like to see Scez….or other Polish goalie in goal. If Diaby is fit, then him plus Lansbury/Denilson in Midfield with Rosicky pulling the strings. Eboue at right back is great and young Gibbs on the left. The Koz needs some game time and I would play him with the Squiller. Up front B52 needs game time as does Theo and Vela. Trouble withe my selected front three is that they are all a little rusty………maybe Arshavin starts?

I think Szczesny, Gibbs, Djourou, Kos, Eboue, Denilson, Rosicky, Diaby (if fit)/JET, Lansbury, Walcott, Bendtner

A mixture of experience and youth. And those needing match practice.

Wilshere’s suspension counts in the Carling Cup and rules him out, so if Diaby is not fit Lansbury is likely to start.

It’s annoying because JET REALLY deserves a chance, but then, I hope vela gets some game time because IMO he’s been really mistreated this season (AGAIN!). Maybe JET would play ahead of lansbury even though he’s been more of a forward this season from the sounds of it.

The strongest team possible. This is the only trophy we have a realistic chance of winning and there is no point in resting players really….If we win the carling cup, it might just catapult us to greater success…So I say, field teh strongest team and win this game.

Djourou should be Right side CB so he can cover RB when Eboué goes forward. This is the natural side for him and looking at the difference in his all-round positioning between Spurs in carling cup & Man City on Sunday, he has to be on the right with Koscielny on left.

i hope since wilshere is suspended,JET needs to replace that position.

the guy is in serious form ,he has played 5 GAMES ,and has scored 8GOALS .i believe he is going to play a major part in the season as it progresses, while senior players rest and prepare for the coimng weekeend.JAY EMMANUEL THOMAS SHOULD BE SERIOUSLY CONSIDERED TO REPLACE WISLHERE.

Subs: JET (on for Denilson at 70 mins), Lansbury (on for Diaby on 70 mins), Eastmond (on for Rosicky on 70 mins).

My substitutions are based on us having a decent lead by the 70th minute and giving youth a chance. The selected team is to give more established players running time and give us maximum chance of winning against whatever side Newcastle field.
