Cheers GChris. Great watch – they could have made it an hour and I’d still be interested. 2 things in particular: Vieira being his first signing. Vieira was signed before Arsene was officially in charge! Also saying that we lost players he didn’t expect to lose. Hleb was the first name that came to mind. Interesting to know whose loss he felt was the most important.

Wenger recommended they sign Vieira before he actually came to the club

@Waleed: Yeah, just funny that he was in effect Wenger’s 1st signing, but actually David Dein bought Vieira. Was Rioch still manager? If so he was ‘in charge’ while both Bergkamp and Vieira joined Arsenal.

@an arse worth having: I’ve heard Wenger saying in previous interviews that one of his big regrets is losing Flamini who he thought would stay even without an improved contract. Hleb also left out of the blue and when Rosicky got injured for 2 years he had lost 3/4 of his midfield. I bet he couldn’t have foreseen the demise of Adebayor’s cult status or Kolo’s departure either. Also you have Almunia’s unprecedented fall from grace (it wasn’t too long ago that we sang “you can’t pass Almunia” and calls were coming in from the England national team). When RVP’s relelentless injuries are added you’re looking at the majority of that side that finished a season but a few points off top, were gone in a season or two. Quite a spanner in the works.

@anarseworthhaving: Flamini perhaps? He left on a free after negotiations on a contract extension broke down. I think his loss as a DM hurt us pretty bad until Song emerged last season.

Good shout. Forgot Flamini. I’d have him back in a flash – he’d be great cover for Song. I wouldn’t have thought of Toure in that way, but interesting to consider that the manager might have. May well have thought Kolo’s form wouldn’t drop playing alongside Gallas. Flamini’s departure and Song’s eventual emergence show what a fine balancing act developing a top football team is.
