Southampton youngster closes in on Arsenal move

Arsenal look likely to win the signature of Southampton teenage prodigy Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, after his father confirmed that the North Londoners are “the ideal choice” for the 17-year-olds development.

The youngster has earned rave reviews for his performances for Saints this season and Gunners boss Arsene Wenger looks likely to beat off the competition and secure a deal in January, with Liverpool, Tottenham and Chelsea amongst those who have been credited with an interest.

“Arsenal, with the manager there, the way they play and develop players to play the game the right way, I think they are the ideal choice,” Mark Chamberlain told Sky Sports News.

Wenger spoke to French television yesterday and confirmed that he is looking at sorting out a deal before the end of the January transfer window.

“I think, if that is right, that is a very good decision,” said Wenger. “We will try now.

“We need an agreement with Southampton, we need an agreement with the player, and we are not the only ones on the case. But we try as hard as we can as I like him as a player.”

Talks are expected to continue between Saints representatives and Ivan Gazidis in the coming days. Stay tuned to our Twitter for the latest information on the transfer story.

Lots of people moaning about the lack of technical ability in young English players. Surely young players moving to a place like Arsenal early on in their careers can only be a good thing. They will develop them technically and give them some first team football at the highest level. And with a bit of luck the ‘next Iniesta’ will be English.

I don’t want him, it would mean we won’t sign Eden Hazard.
