Fabregas out of Emirates Cup

Cesc Fabregas won’t be involved in this weekend’s Emirates Cup tournament after Arsene Wenger revealed that the Arsenal captain ‘isn’t settled’ with his ‘injury’ and ‘situation’ at the club.

The Spaniard has not featured in any of Arsenal’s pre-season games so far, instead working on his match fitness with personal trainer Juan Ferrando following a troublesome hamstring problem.

Barcelona have made two offers for the 23-year-old – both under £30m – while Gunners chairman Peter Hill-Wood admitted yesterday that the Catalan giants need to ‘make their minds up’ before talks end between the clubs.

“He [Fabregas] is just coming back from injury and we have to make sure that he is focused on being with us. I always say he is torn between two loves – the club where he has been educated as a very young boy and the club where he has been educated from 16 onwards and he has been given a chance. I personally can understand it.”

Tomorrow’s Emirates Cup kicks off with MLS side New York Red Bulls playing against Paris Saint-Germain, while Arsenal face Boca Juniors later in the afternoon.

Galatasaray yet to agree personal terms with Eboue

Emmanuel Eboue’s ongoing move to Turkish giants Galatasaray has hit a stumbling block after the Ivorian rejected the contract terms offered to him.

The 28-year-old right-back, who was left out of the club’s pre-season tour of Asia, is one of several players who has had offers welcomed for them due to average performances last season.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger had also admitted this week that Eboue and Nicklas Bendtner are likely to leave this summer.

“How many will leave the club? I said from the start I will fight to keep everybody. Nicklas Bendtner might go and Emmanuel Eboue might go. They can talk to clubs, but the rest I will fight.”

Earlier this week, Galatasaray officials met with Eboue’s representatives after a fee in the region of £4million was reportedly agreed between the two clubs.

However, the versatile defender’s wages have managed to prove a sticking point for Fatih Terim’s side, who are expected to come back with an improved contract offer for the former Beveren player in the coming days.

Ivory Coast international Eboue has been at Arsenal since the summer of 2006, making a total of 214 appearances during his five-year stay in north London.

Arsenal Transfer Analysis: Phil Jagielka

28, Defender, Everton

As with all the articles I do on a player linked with Arsenal, this piece will attempt to cover a few interesting pieces of the player’s identity and biography. Over the past few weeks a number of journalists have stepped out to say that they believed Jagielka to be the primary target for Arsène Wenger rather than Gary Cahill. Wenger has made a £10m bid for the player which has been turned down, and this is the reason Jagielka will be covered in this piece.

The first thing that struck me when I heard of an Englishman who was snapping ferocious tackles in at Sheffield United under Neil Warnock was; where does his name come from? Turns out he is of Polish descent and was born Philip Nikodem Jagielka in Sale, Greater Manchester. His grandparents fled Poland after the Second World War. As a young teenager he started off as a schoolboy at Everton, before joining The Blades at 15 years of age. There his talent as a defensive midfielder, with a rocket propelled work rate and a physicality to dominate the midfield in the Championship, allowed him to make a real name for himself. A great season in 2005-06 allowed him to play a mammoth 46 games and score 8 goals. He won the Championship award for best player that season. The following year they were promoted. His year in the Premier League with United was ultimately a disappointment as they were relegated. However, his versatility lead to one of the highlights of the season. Forced to play in goal against Arsenal after Paddy Kenny was injured, they managed to secure a famous 1-0 victory. He even made an excellent late save from Robin Van Persie.

Jagielka’s life has had sadness as well. His grandfather was a potential and unproven murder victim of serial killer Harold Shipman. He said “When my grandfather died, he put his hand on my right shoulder and said, ‘I think I’ll stay here a while in case he wakes up so he doesn’t scare people. I didn’t think anything of it at the time, but I do now.” Whilst recovering from a cruciate injury last year, 3 masked men from an organised criminal gaang burst into his rented £2.5m mansion with knives and threatened Jagielka. They stole valuables and a Range Rover, which was later found abandoned.

Having joined Everton, he found a gritty and ambitious Scottish manager under David Moyes prepared to support him fully and smooth his rough edges. Having moved back into centre defence he showed the grittiness of an old school tough centre defender, with the passing game to take the ball and move it forward. Moyes pushes Jagielka, not just as a footballer, as a man and leader. Moyes said in March this year that he could potentially become an England captain but that ‘he needs to drive himself on to be that person; it has to come from within.’ The undertone of that comment is that Jagielka maybe lacks the aggressive, cutting edge of John Terry or Rio Ferdinand. Moyes also said ‘Sometimes he suffers from self doubt’, whilst ‘he should be looking at himself as a future Everton captain and he agrees that he has to start being a leader.’ Interesting that Arsenal supporters point to Jagielka as the natural leader, when even his own manager says he does not (yet) have that element in his personality. I would hope Wenger is able to spend the money to buy a taller player with less injury problems, younger and better passing skills. Therefore we return to Gary Cahill. Bolton Wanderers are waiting to see if Chelsea or Manchester City make a move for him.

Everton are notoriously tough negotiators, well known for driving prices extremely high and turning a seemingly simple deal into a long running saga. Turning down £10m for a player turning 29 years of age in less than a month is brave decision, despite the fact Wenger offered £12m last season. If Everton are asking for a £15m then that is a lot of money considering he does not even meet the mandate of what Arsenal genuinely need. In short, this deal is doomed until there is an immense shift in policy from Everton to sell or Arsenal to pay substantially more. A huge, angry, commanding centre back with natural leadership skills must be the requisite qualities for the next Arsenal centre defender Wenger purchases to deal with the set piece problems we have. Jagielka could play a simple and limited centre back role alongside Vermaelen or Djourou. He would likely allow them, as the more comfortable passers to bring out the ball. However alongside Laurent Koscielny, I just do not see that pairing as having the muscularity or presence to change anything about our current spinal weakness.

Jagielka would bring other qualities if he were to sign for Arsenal. He does not have an ego (a trademark Wenger plus), has a good work rate, a positive attitude and a knack for digging deep to grind the best standards of play from his team mates. If he had a nastier side, a tendency to grip opposition players by the throat as the dark art masters from Inter Milan do at corners, I would be keener.

“I don’t want to be fifth or sixth choice at Arsenal”, says Bartley

Young Arsenal defender Kyle Bartley will hold talks with Gunners manager Arsene Wenger this week in the hope of resolving his short-term future at the club.

The 20-year-old spent an impressive loan spell at Rangers last season, although his campaign ended earlier than expected due to a knee ligament injury.

With Thomas Vermaelen, Johan Djourou, Laurent Koscielny, and Sebastien Squillaci all ahead of him in defence, Bartley realises that another move to Scotland could prove helpful for his development.

“I hope to know by the early part of this week what Arsene Wenger’s feelings are”, Bartley revealed.

“I don’t want to be fifth or sixth choice at Arsenal. I’d rather be playing more regularly and Rangers would be perfect.”

Manchester-born Bartley made his Arsenal debut in the Champions League against Olympiakos in December 2009 but was subsequently loaned out to Sheffield United.

Denilson expected to secure São Paulo loan move

Arsenal midfielder Denilson will fly to Brazil on Monday for a medical after the Gunners accepted a season-long loan offer from São Paulo.

The wantaway 23-year-old, who has already expressed his desire to quit the club, struggled to find a new team this summer despite tentative interest from England and Spain, making it look likely that he’d remain with Arsenal next season.

However, São Paulo’s director of football Adalberto Baptista approached Arsenal last week and a deal was immediately agreed to sign their former player, according to ESPN Brasil.

Fellow Brazilian side Fluminense also expressed an interest in signing the Brazilian, but São Paulo were reportedly ‘faster’ to reach an agreement with Arsenal.

It is unknown whether Arsenal have given São Paulo the option to buy the creative midfielder, although his departure – albeit on loan – almost certainly spells the end of his five year career in north London.

Arsenal ’7th most valuable’ sports club in the world

Arsenal have been ranked the ‘seventh most valuable’ sports club in the world, according to Forbes magazine.

The respected US publication released its latest rich list of sports teams, with Arsenal having a reported valuation of $1.19 billion (£740m).

“The clubs located in cities where real estate/commercial property is expensive naturally have an advantage as their stadium and surrounding environs are valued more. Chelsea is an exception because although located in London it is also one of the most leveraged clubs with $889m (£550m) of debt put on the club and its holding company”, the SoccerBlog website said.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Manchester United lead the list with a valuation $1.86 billion, while Real Madrid are the second most valuable football club lying in fifth place ($1.45 billion). The Gunners and Chelsea are in seventh and 46th place respectively.

American businessman Stan Kroenke secured a controlling stake in Arsenal towards the end of last season, adding to his ownership of NBA basketball franchise the Denver Nuggets, the Colorado Avalanche NHL ice hockey team and Major-league Soccer side the Colorado Rapids.

Szczesny to be ‘offered’ No 1 shirt after Almunia’s departure

Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny will be offered the No 1 jersey once Manuel Almunia’s exit from the club is officially confirmed.

Szczesny, currently on the Gunners’ pre-season tour in Malaysia, has been wearing a temporary No 13 shirt while waiting for confirmation that he’ll inherit Almunia’s squad number after the Spaniard leaves.

The 20-year-old was one of the bright spots in an otherwise dismal season for the Arsenal keepers last campaign and the Pole looks to be the future, with Wenger previously hinting that he may decide to stick with what he has got.

“I realise there is a big chance in front of me and I might not give this No 1 shirt away to anyone else for the next ten to 15 years,” Szczesny told Arsenal Player in an exclusive interview on Tuesday.

“It is my first full season in the first team so I have never been as excited as this. This year will be something new for me if I am lucky enough to start the season as Arsenal’s No 1.

Pre-season kicks off for Arsene Wenger’s side later this afternoon with a match against an Malaysia XI in Kuala Lumpur – kicking off at 13:45 BST.
