Vermaelen scores at both ends as Arsenal salvage draw – Arsenal 1-1 Fulham

Thomas Vermaelen scored an own goal and equaliser as Arsenal came from behind to draw against Fulham at Emirates Stadium.

The Gunners’ best chance in the half came to Aaron Ramsey, but he was denied by a fine save from Mark Schwarzer.

Andrey Arshavin had the ball in the Fulham net after six minutes, but the linesman ruled the strike out for offside.

In-form striker Robin van Persie had a shot blocked on the line by Chris Baird on 58 minutes, before the Dutchman went down in the penalty area amidst a crowd of Fulham bodies. However, Arsenal players didn’t seem to appeal to the referee.

The Cottagers went ahead on 65 minutes when Vermaelen put the ball into his own net after John Arne Riise had controlled well in the box.

van Persie flashed a free kick wide 10 minutes later before Vermaelen made amends for his earlier error when he headed Theo Walcott’s cross into the net.

As expected, Arsenal pushed for the winner, but some dogged defending by their opponents meant that they had to settle for a share of the spoils.

No. Arsenal should of won. 3 good saves and a clearance off the line from Fulham. And the ref was a joke. Wasnt a stone-waller. But was still a pen to RVP imo and even though Fulham has 10 shots I didnt see Sczcesny troubled once the whole match

Just one of those days today. Ramsey had a day to forget but will get over that and Arshavin, for me, is a lost cause. Do think Wenger needs to look at transfer market to get someone to help Van Persie with the goal scoring in Jan.

The point and result is not bad, ending a winning run into the next tough game is worrying. Especially with the potential line-up.

Dissapointed to drop points at home, but I think some of the lads played real well, loved the subs introduction and I think they were crucial to our game play, Chamakh fought for every ball, and Gervinho apart from his finish is outstanding ..

Walcott has really picked it up, and is really getting there, his crosses have really improved .

overall I think we did everything and were just unlucky, but looking at us coming back from a huge European game, and getting a difficult job done there will definitely help us in the future !!

Fair enough for both team. Arsenal created a lot of chances but they can’t finish it well. Beside that, Schwarzer and the defender played well.

Was a hard fought point but considering that we played against dortmund during the week its not too bad a result as the players looked exhausted!

  8. Fulham did well with defense so they deserved a point. on Arsenal’s side it was unfair, an og have cost ‘em 2 points sadly, they could’ve done better at front. it’s safe to say Mike Dean denied us a win today.

This is the result of NO ROTATION! Ramysey and Arteta didn’t play well because they were fatigue. We must rotate after a big CL match during the week.

  10. we looked really tired after a demanding UCL match. Lack of mobility and pace. Found wanting. Another game at midweek (big game too).

i think it will be a blessing on disguise if we get knocked out. last year we couldn’t cope physically and mentally with that defeat after an amazing cup run to the final. And a game in wednesday night. followed by one day rest and then training only on friday and then again game at Saturday is really hard on the players.

  11. And did anyone notice, that when Verminator scored that goal, Chamakh completely missed the ball just before.

Ramsey played like a kid, wasteful with chances. Arshavin cant link properly with RvP…sell him.

in the last 4-5 mins more balls in the box should have been drifted in. instead, we were struggling to get the ball out of our own half.
diaby was pretty solid, i liked his imapct, also gervinho was great down the left, and chamakh … thats what i want to see from him- working hard striker who gets back, fights for every ball …
anyway, with diaby back and rosicky fit, arsene should be able to rotate more and keep his players fresh. looking forward to the man city game.
can anyone just tell me WAS SENDEROS AS GOOD AS GOAL.COM SAYS? apparantly he is their highest rated player

Wild suggestion, but bear with me. In case no winger comes in in Jan, what about Gibbs on left back and Santos as a winger? Arshavin does not contribute to this team at all.

Arshavin is well and truly past it Gervinho is miles better than him.

just shut it about arshavin, i cant stand it anymore. the guy hadnt played in the starting lineup for some time, and now you all bitching about him. shut up, he is great player, and as wenger said, he will feature in the next games and show how good he is. he is already short of confidence, your comments do him no better. stupid fans, arsenal has one negative result and you start slapping the players

Arsenal need to sell Diaby and Arshavin in January, even for little money. They are a waste of space.

NO .. If we had started the game with the same urgency we finished it with lien we would have won .. That was the old Arsenal mind set jugular pass and probe and expect something to happen – not good enough!

I wish everyone would just shut up about Djourou,Diaby,Santos, and to some extent,Chamakh. No comment for Arshavin. Djourou had been out for a few monthsm and needs to get back to his best. Diaby is steady and is a bloody great player when he gets up and running, a Messi performance against Man United last year!(1-0)!Santos isnt a full back, hes a winger,so his defending isnt great, but his attacking can be useful. Chamakh had the odd chance where he does well. He was lively against Fulham. Ramsey was very, very tired against them. I think Arsenal can beat Man City in the cup, and they need to get Nasri! There’s a small chance with the league match against them to! Song is improving, hes 83 on Fifa!
