Vermaelen scores at both ends as Arsenal salvage draw – Arsenal 1-1 Fulham

Thomas Vermaelen scored an own goal and equaliser as Arsenal came from behind to draw against Fulham at Emirates Stadium.

The Gunners’ best chance in the half came to Aaron Ramsey, but he was denied by a fine save from Mark Schwarzer.

Andrey Arshavin had the ball in the Fulham net after six minutes, but the linesman ruled the strike out for offside.

In-form striker Robin van Persie had a shot blocked on the line by Chris Baird on 58 minutes, before the Dutchman went down in the penalty area amidst a crowd of Fulham bodies. However, Arsenal players didn’t seem to appeal to the referee.

The Cottagers went ahead on 65 minutes when Vermaelen put the ball into his own net after John Arne Riise had controlled well in the box.

van Persie flashed a free kick wide 10 minutes later before Vermaelen made amends for his earlier error when he headed Theo Walcott’s cross into the net.

As expected, Arsenal pushed for the winner, but some dogged defending by their opponents meant that they had to settle for a share of the spoils.
