Wenger confirms Arsenal are close to signing goalkeeper David Ospina

Ospina

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has confirmed that Colombia goalkeeper David Ospina is on the verge of joining the club from French side Nice.

Signing competition for current No.1 Wojciech Szczesny became top priority for Wenger after the departure of Lukasz Fabianski and Emiliano Viviano this summer.

Ospina, whose contract expires at Nice next summer, has agreed personal terms with Arsenal while both sides have also agreed on a fee which is expected to be around the £3.5million mark.

“You know at the start Szczesny will be the No. 1, then again we’ll be down to performances and, if Ospina shows that he is better, he will play”, said Wenger.

The 25-year-old played in each game of Colombia’s run to the World Cup quarter-finals, where they were beaten by Brazil and he impressed with his excellent shot stopping throughout the tournament.

Former Atlético Nacional shot stopper Ospina, renowned for his phenomenal reflexes and athleticism, will compete with Szczesny for the no.1 spot at Arsenal when he arrives at the club next week.

He made 29 league appearances last season and his efforts helped Nice avoid relegation on the final day of last season.
