Arsenal’s defence has been placed under the magnifying glass recently, and with scrutiny being piled upon the club’s leaky back-line, the Gunners are allegedly eyeing a January swoop for West Bromwich Albion’s £20m-rated captain Jonny Evans in a bid to shore-up the department – according to a report published by the Mirror.

Evans, 30, has 18-months remaining on his current deal, however it’s believed that the Northern Ireland international is reluctant to sign an extension at the Baggies, which also means that if the West Midlands club were to be relegated from the Premier League, the centre-half could depart The Hawthorns for as little as £3m.

A figure which is top of the north-Londoners’ mid-season wish-list, Arsenal could face competition from top-flight rivals Manchester City, although it’s said that Arsene Wenger and co. may hold the upper-hand in the race for Evans’ signature, as Pep Guardiola allegedly favours reinforcements from the continent, rather than English soil.

A busy window for Arsenal certainly seems to be forming after bringing in Henrikh Mkhitaryan from Manchester United in exchange for Alexis Sanchez, and whilst Borussia Dortmund’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang appears to be close to a January switch to the Emirates, Wenger insists that the spending could still continue to ensure that every area is bolstered sufficiently and appropriately.

“It depends on the opportunities we have. We can buy players. We are busy on all fronts, so overall I think we are open-minded. Every opportunity we have to strengthen our squad, we’ll take.” The French boss said.

“After that, we’ll see at the end. There’s still a lot that will happen as usual on the transfer market.”
