Transfer Window…The Mourning After

Yesterday marked the closing of the transfer window, something we Gooners have come to fear/put all our hopes into. In past years, we’ve made some rather stunning purchases, but alas, the most obvious one of the entire summer never came to fruition. Call it what you may, from Wenger’s intransigence to perceived failure of the higher-ups to nab his transfer targets, the purchase of a quality goalkeeper which the majority of fans thought was an obvious necessity never materialised in quite underwhelming fashion. 0600 pm came and went with barely a whisper of hope.

Perhaps fingers can be pointed at Wenger for waiting this late to make a decisive move. Secondly, maybe the market was as tepid as he claimed it to be. Regardless, two things had to be accomplished this summer: the retention of Cesc, and the replacement of Almunia. Whether the former is significant enough to make up for the shortcomings of the latter remains to be seen. In my observation, Almunia has cost the Arsenal too many points in previous years. As good of a character as people think him to be, he nevertheless is not of the requisite quality to be an asset to the squad. At this point, conventional wisdom would surely be to back him, despite his lack of ability. It’s bad enough to have a sub-standard keeper, and it’s absolutely nightmarish to have one without confidence. That being said, there were some positives to take from this summer.

The Defenders

The acquisitions of both Koscielny and Squillaci were a welcome sight. It showed true conviction on Wenger’s part. Of course, there are fans who think these two defenders are not good enough, but I trust Wenger’s judgment over theirs. Koscielny has so far done well enough, and will surely get stronger, and most importantly, better. Squillaci, in the meantime, will be able to jump straight into the squad. We now have at the Club three defenders capable of being positive assets to our title push this year. Djourou could be a 4th option, but his fitness is always in doubt.

The Striker

The free signing of Marouane Chamakh, albeit belated, is a massive step in the right direction. His ability to be a high-quality replacement whenever van Persie is making his monthly visit to the treatment table is an improvement upon last year’s squad. He, like Koscielny, will only improve as they become more adjusted to the team’s style of play.

El Capitan

Wenger’s success in persuading Cesc to stay with us this year is, pardon the cliche, like a new signing. His desire to move to Barcelona during the summer cannot be debated, but neither can his professionalism or commitment to the Arsenal cause. Therefore, Gooners around the world should sleep better knowing we have the best center midfielder in the world as part of our ranks. His staying not only is an injection of real quality, but should be one of inspiration to the rest of the team. No doubt they place great faith in his abilities, so to have seen him depart would have been a real kick in the teeth to the squad. Instead, quite the opposite has happened. Here’s to many more goals and assists to come from our young Fab.

The transfer window has left us Gooners with as many questions as answers. Will Koscielny justify his price tag? Will Cesc replicate his previous form? Can Chamakh fill in adequately for van Persie? And finally, will Almunia let 25 yard hit-and-hope vollies fly through his hands down at the White Hot Swamp again? If everything works out in the positive, it might’ve been a summer of real success. If any number of factors goes awry, there could be trouble on the horizon.

Exclusive: Wenger On Arshavin – "Be Patient"

Gooner Talk can exclusively reveal that Arsene Wenger has refused to deny the consistent rumours concerning Russia forward Andrey Arshavin.

Zenit St Petersberg star Arshavin has attracted an array of admiring clubs on the strength of two spectacular Euro 2008 performances against Sweden and the Netherlands, Arsenal are said to be one of them.

French tactician Wenger admitted on French TV that he doesn’t have £40 million to spend in the January transfer window, but surprisingly revealed what positions he’s looking to strengthen in and also answered a question about Arshavin.

Wenger, speaking to Canal + said:

“I start feeling the crisis but I can’t spend £40m. We are looking at a creative player and another midfielder.”

When asked about the Arshavin link, Wenger replied with a coy smile and answer.

“Be a little patient. From the moment you give a name, you remove 50% chance of success to sign him.”

Whilst talking to British broadcaster Sky Sports, once again the Arsenal boss remained secretive on his January transfer plans.

You can watch the interview with Sky here.

Zenit St Petersberg star Arshavin has attracted an array of admiring clubs on the strength of two spectacular Euro 2008 performances against Sweden and the Netherlands.

It seems Arshavin is destined to be the replacement for Cesc Fabregas after the Spaniard sustained a long-term knee injury that will keep him out for four months.

Bischoff & Silvestre Named In Reserves Line-Up

Summer signings Amaury Bischoff and Mikael Silvestre are set to make their Arsenal debuts tonight – in a reserve game against Stoke City.

Bischoff, 21, signed on a free transfer after his contract expired at Werder Bremen while former Manchester United defender Silvestre, signed towards the end of August after agreeing a move.

Both players have had a previous catalogue of injuries under their old clubs, but tonight can possible build them up as the season starts to get into full force.

Reserves boss Neil Banfield spoke to Arsenal.com ahead of the well-awaited tie at Underhill.

“The manager thought Bischoff and Silvestre need a game. Mikael asked to play, he’s a good pro and he feels he needs a run-out so that will be good for him. Amaury will play as part of his rehabilitation so everything is coming along fine.”

Confirmed Starting XI

Szczesny
Ayling – Bartley – Silvestre – Gibbs
Bischoff – Coquelin – Randall – Wilshere
Fonte – Simpson

Stoke have also named a strong side with Vincent Pericard, Tom Soares, Danny Pugh and Wales centre back Ryan Shawcross playing against his ex-team-mate Mikael Silvestre.

Match Preview: Sunderland v Arsenal (Premier League)

Sunderland host Arsenal at the Stadium of Light in today’s 3:00 kick-off looking to follow the example set by Hull City last weekend.

The newly-promoted Tigers ripped up the formbook and made a mockery of the bookmakers who made them distant outsiders to take anything away from the Emirates Stadium as they left north London with a 2-1 victory.

That result has given the rest of the top-flight’s lesser lights belief that they too can compete on any given day with the top four and it’s fair to assume that Black Cats boss Roy Keane will have conveyed that to his players this week.

Injury concerns continue to hamper Keane’s plans though as he will once again be without Kenwyne Jones (knee), Teemu Tainio (shoulder), Nyron Nosworthy (hamstring) and possibly Phil Bardsley (ankle).

Arsene Wenger admitted he felt sickened by Arsenal’s ‘careless’ defeat at the hands of Hull, which also saw them relinquish their position at the top of the Premier League table to Chelsea.

However, the Frenchman was heartened by his side’s 4-0 Champions League thrashing of FC Porto on Tuesday night with Emmanuel Adebayor and Robin van Persie both bagging braces.

Domestically, Arsenal have now been beaten twice – which is just one less than the total number of losses they suffered during the entire 38 games of last year’s campaign – so Wenger knows any further slip-ups could be costly.

The Gunners remain unable to call on the services of Abou Diaby (thigh), Tomas Rosicky (hamstring) and Eduardo da Silva (broken ankle).

Predicted Starting XI

Almunia
Sagna – Toure – Gallas – Clichy
Walcott – Fabregas – Denilson – Nasri
Adebayor – van Persie

Match Prediction: Sunderland 1-3 Arsenal

France U18 Crowd Tragedy Witnessed By Arsenal Youngsters

On Thursday evening, France under-18′s took on Ukraine in what looked like a tough proposition for a side which included Arsenal youngsters Francis Coquelin and Gilles Sunu.

Little did they know, a major tragedy was about to occur within the Saint-Denis-de-l’Hôtel, central France. A parachutist was planned to spectacularly fly in and place the match ball on the pitch. It went completely wrong.

Experienced Parachutist Sylvain Charbrol, crashed unprecedentedly into the crowd wounding two teenagers. Not only was it a horrendous error, but a massive upset in the French community. The teenager suffered a cardiac rest following his injury and died of his wounds in hospital.

The referee immediately called for the match to be suspended, while Coquelin and Sunu looked on in amazement and horror.

France Football Federation President Jean-Pierre Escalette told their official website:

“This type of accident jump demonstration with percussion from the crowd is unprecedented.” “In keeping me from any final conclusion, an investigation by the police is still ongoing, it is likely that Sylvain has poorly understood and appreciated his arrival on stage.”, He said.

“The other six were paratroopers, they posed no problem after the accident. “But themselves do not know what happened, they have not seen anything.”

Everybody at Gooner Talk would like to express their deepest sympathies to the families of those children as well as Sylvain Charbrol’s family.

Exclusive Interview: Philippe Auclair Talks Arsenal (Part 1)

Gooner Talk have managed to carry out an exclusive interview featuring one of France’s most passionate and talented football journalists – Philippe Auclair.

In his homecountry, Auclair is renowned for his work in the music industry where his name – Louis Philippe – was associated with the short-lived, but very influential ‘él record label’; since this label’s demise (1989), he has grown into one of the ‘elder statesmen’ of indiepop.

Philippe – who is a hardcore Gooner himself – works for RMCinfo, arguably the biggest radio station in France. He’s also a regular contributor to FranceFootball where he posts a daily blog on all things footy, definitely one to read.

Our British readers may be more familiar with Auclair’s work on Setanta Sports News as their French football analyst, as well as popular radio stations TalkSPORT radio & BBC Scotland.

Part 1 of the interview includes:

  • Philippe’s opinions on the latest young crop of Arsenal talent coming up through the ranks.
  • His views on why Michel Platini made a ‘personal attack’ against Gunners boss Arsene Wenger via the French media.
  • What Philippe thinks about the squad in terms of experience and quality of football.
  • Arsenal’s chances of winning silverware this season and if so, what trophy are we most likely to claim.

And much, much more!
