Swedish striker linked with Gunners

Marcus Berg

Sweden’s Under-21 star Marcus Berg has received interest from all of the England’s top four Premier League clubs, according to the Swedish media.

The 22-year-old is hot property after he bagged a hat-trick during the Swede’s 5-1 annihilation of Belarus earlier in the week, his agent revealed that Spain is the ‘ideal’ destination for him.

“We have various discussions with clubs from England, Italy and Germany”, said Martin Fudge, speaking to the Expressen. “The clubs are great but the chance that he deserves to play is great. The preference of Berg goes to Spain, but another country is not an insurmountable problem.”

Currently playing for Dutch minnows, Groningen has blasted 30 goals in his first 50 Dutch top-flight games, which has seen him capped by the Swedish senior side.

Berg has bundles of pace, agility and heading ability so it’s unsurprising that Arsene Wenger’s scouting network have their eye on the highly-rated youngster.

Sagna ‘proud’ to wear the shirt, but what about Eboue & co?

Eboue

The ever-professional that is Bacary Sagna released a statement on Arsenal.com earlier saying that he’s 100 percent committed to the Gunners’ cause.

After rumours linking Sagna with a move to Real Madrid in the French press, he immediately refuted them by issuing the following:

“This is a great Club and I’m proud to wear the shirt. I’m looking forward to returning for pre-season training in July and preparing for the challenges that next season will bring. We have a great squad of players at the Club and I know that we can achieve something together at Arsenal, my focus is nowhere else.”

During his time at Arsenal, Sagna has worn his heart on his sleeve throughout almost every game.

The Frenchman’s athletic runs from the back, coupled with his determination in defence, make a perfect combination and it’s understandable why the supporters have taken to him so well since his signing from Auxerre in 2007.

However, this is where we come to Emmanuel Eboue. The much maligned Ivory Coast star received mixed signals from Gooners last season due to his up and down league form.

“It would be hard [to leave],” Eboue told France Football. “But I think it would be harder to experience another season like this one, too far off the pitch.

“In any case, if I leave Arsenal, it would be for another league because it is out of the question that I develop elsewhere in England.”

It really does beg the question that are only a few of our players fully committed to the club? Cesc Fabregas, Sagna, Eduardo, Gael Clichy are a few of the loyal stars. But the likes of Emmanuel Adebayor and Eboue have already touted for moves away from the Emirates in recent weeks.

Have we really missed out on Matuidi?

Matuidi

Saint Etienne midfielder Blaise Matuidi will sign for Everton this summer, according to French radio station RMC.

22-year-old Matuidi is extremely highly-rated in his homeland and it’s no secret that Arsenal’s French scout Gilles Grimandi has already watched several Les Verts matches this season.

The almost-relegated Saint Etienne are likely to lose many of their star players this summer, France Under-21 star Matuidi will definitely be one of them.

Have Arsenal really missed out on Matuidi though?

We’ve already got a similar player in Alex Song, who’s more experienced and more adapted to the rigours of Premier League football.

Indeed, if Arsene Wenger did sign up Mamadou Sakho, there would be no need for a player of Matuidi’s quality – with Sakho’s versatility meaning he’d be able to play in defensive midfield.

Arsène Wenger champions Council of Europe anti-discrimination campaign

wenger

Football manager Arsène Wenger has given his backing to the Council of Europe’s 47-country campaign against racism and discrimination.

Wenger said: ”I support the Council of Europe in its campaign against discrimination. I believe everybody who loves football should just enjoy how great the players are and nothing else.”

The Arsenal manager has a strong record of fighting discrimination and has helped to shape the careers of many top black Premiership footballers such as Kolo Toure, Emmanuel Adebayor, Sol Campbell, and Thierry Henry.

Many observers credit Wenger, an economics graduate from Alsace, France, with accelerating the development of African football, in particular by recruiting talent from the west of the continent. He is is also hailed by anti-racism campaigners for helping to break a domestic football taboo by selecting more than three black players for his first team.

Piara Powar, director for English football’s equality and inclusion campaign, said: “Arsene Wenger is an individual who has made a real impact on the English game. Intelligent and considered, he’s been a fervent advocate of the Kick It Out campaign for many years.

“His ethos of diversity and inclusion makes him an ideal ambassador for the Council of Europe’s anti-discrimination campaign.”

Ged Grebby, Chief Executive of ‘Show Racism the Red Card,’ described the Arsenal manager as an ”outstanding supporter” of anti-racism. He emphasised Wenger’s contribution and that of his club to anti-discrimination work with north London school children.

”Arsene Wenger is an excellent ambassador for anti-racism, and indeed anti-discrimination and always conducts himself in an impeccable way,’‘ Grebby added.

The anti-discrimination campaign has also won support from sporting and cultural icons such as flamboyant Dutch Eurovision group ‘The Toppers,’ Montpellier Hérault Rugby Club lock Mamuka Gorgodze, Greek actress Pemi Zouni and Norwegian film star Jenny Skavlan.

”It is important to speak about the discrimination and racism that exists in society,’‘ said another supporter, the ex-Barcelona footballer Lilian Thuram, who is now president of the “Education Against Racism” foundation.

”Unfortunately, there is a tendency to deny that the society was constructed on the fact of seeing others as different and inferior.”

A Council of Europe spokeswoman said high profile celebrity support helps to promote the values of the organisation, now celebrating its 60th anniversary. It would also allow the campaign’s messages to reach a broader audience.

“Our star supporters are living the values we want to see,” the spokeswoman added. “They are role models for each and every one of us.”

The Council of Europe, the region’s oldest and largest assembly of nations, believes the media can make a crucial contribution to raising awareness of discrimination and can play an important role in the promotion of dialogue in a multi-ethnic, multi-faith environment. The campaign also encourages media organisations to adopt fairer recruitment policies which would allow more ethnic minorities to enter the profession.

”Our mandate is to defend and extend the values of freedom and human dignity for every individual, regardless of his or her nationality, ethnic origin, cultural background, religious beliefs or other characteristics,” said the organisation’s Deputy Secretary General Maud de Boer-Buquicchio.

Vermaelen’s agent negotiating move

thomasvermaelen

Ajax skipper Thomas Vermaelen should be an Arsenal player soon after sources in his home country revealed that the Dutch giants have given permission for the 23-year-old’s agent to begin negotiations with the Gunners’.

Vermaelen is currently on a plane to Mauritius, while his agent Sören Lerby forges out a £10 million move to the Emirates Stadum. Ajax directors reportedly met with Ivan Gazidis on Wednesday where they were said to have accepted Arsenal’s offer.

The former Germinal Beerschot star impressed many with his performances at the Beijing Olympics last summer and attracted interest from a host of top European sides.

Meanwhile, Vermaelen’s transfer should almost certainly secure Philippe Senderos’ permanent stay at AC Milan. The Swiss centre half had a tricky three years at Arsenal before moving to the San Siro on loan last season.

When it’s confirmed, Vermaelen will be the second most expensive Belgian signing after Everton’s acquisition of Marouane Fellani for £15 million last summer.
