Reports – AS Saint-Étienne's Matuidi Close To Gunners Move
|Arsenal are reportedly closing in on the signing of Saint Etienne’s deep-lying playmaker Blaise Matuidi according to Sky Sports News.
Gunners boss Arsene Wenger has been linked with a number of midfielder’s this summer since declaring that he was looking to bring one quality player in midfield to the Emirates Stadium earlier this summer.
Liverpool’s Xabi Alonso, along with Everton targets Jonathan De Guzman and Stephane Mbia have all been reportedly targets for Wenger, who has lost key midfielder’s Mathieu Flamini, Gilberto Silva and Alexander Hleb during this transfer window.
Arsenal’s French-based scout Gilles Grimandi has seen the Matuidi in action for Les Verts and Arsene Wenger is also a known admirer of the Tolouse-born star.
However, it has now emerged that it is 21-year-old Matuidi that is set to join the Gunners, with it not known how advanced talks are between St Etienne and Arsenal.
French Under-21 International Matuidi joined Etienne from Troyes last summer, making 36 appearances for the Ligue 1 team last season and is one of France’s most sought-after prospects.
can you please describe his style of play
So we are not signing Gorkan Inler?
Inler's agent said he'd stay for another season.
I'm assuming he's like Alonso if he's a deep lying playmaker, in which case he could act as a substitute for Cesc if he's injured or needs to be rested.

“Matuidi has an important work rate and can run like a mad during 90 minutes and more like Flamini good passer. He scored a beautiful goal last Saturday too. Very good defensively, good tackler too. What we need.”
I'm not sure how true but he's a defensive midfielder. Quote from a French Arsenal fan from a well-known Arsenal forum.
were on sky sports news
But Inler
https://goonertalk.com/2008/08/23/inler-on-the-v…
this is not on sky sports
It was at 6:40 this evening, they went around the regions and in London the reporter said close to signing Matuidi.
more bull
If he is as good as he appears to be and can be signed injury free as he fits perfectly with Arsene's profile for a player I would be ecstatic to see him at the Emirates. At this stage I would be happy with almost any midfield signing and then hopefully get the rest of the squad off the physio's table and we might stand a chance of having a reasonable season
any videos on this guy?
I signed matuidi on fifa manager 08 for arsenal, he was a gun hahahahaha
Vinny, read below instead of making factless accusations.
Yes this was on Sky Sports New. I read that earlier today. Well we need somebody with quality in midfield,I've never even heard of this guy…so yes Wenger will sign him. LOL!
plz no more french afircan players i am not rascist but our dressing room has to be a place where english is soken and apparently french is spoken the most so how can we have team spirit when most of our player speal french. We need more english players and i hope Wenger gives chances to lansbury, wilshere and bartley three players i feel can break into the team. Lansbury is our best central midfielder by a long shot in our youth systems. These lads apart from barltey are arsenal fans and they are english so you can expect a better team spirit

Wow, another French fella, just bwe are lacking!
please venger get NIGEL DE JONG.
i have seen Matuidi and what Ive seen of him i can say he is quality, he is a good link up player with an eye for goal hes very quick and aggressive
he also has alot of skill. he works well with the young highly rated Gomis who is also a French international at saint Etienne.
So you are saying that english players have a better team spirit that foreign players? You must be right as the english national team players are playing like champions since 1966… Matuidi is a very good player but I'll be very surprised if Saint Etienne let him go…. He would definitely add good depth & strength to the Arsenal midfield.
Gomis is a poor man's Adebayor so Matuidi and Ade will link up as well I suppose?
He's
a highly-rated Clairfontaine graduate from the 87 generation which includes Nasri and Benzema. I havent seen much of him. I think he's probably the 3rd or 4th option in Wenger list behind Alonso & Inler.
Song doesnt look like a CM midfielder for me. Maybe in a 4-5-1 it would work. Eboue I think is more defensive and wins more balls than Denilson but the fans dont seem to be behind him & it is effecting him a little. He looks more suited to CM at least as a squad player
He's french, of african heritage, probably less than 6 foot tall, has never managed a full seasons football, never heard of him = just the type of signing we should expect.
Just once it would be nice to get an established player, we have enough potential as it is with Denilson, Song, Diaby, Ramsey, Randall, Lansbury why buy yet another 'promising kid'
goonerchris if you can, can you please delete all the comments i have made. not just from this article but from previous ones aswell, it would be highly appreciated if you could do so. thankks.
Great talent with a good left foot, from what I've seen. Would be very happy to see him at Arsenal, though what we really need at this stage is experience. Althogh he's played some three full seasons in the Frensh top flight he would take some time to get settled in the Prem. Plus, he has no CL/European experience.
Dont be surprised if his team mate Mouhamodou Dabo arrives with him as we wanted to sign both in May.
Shut the fuck up, Chav.
we could really do with 2 signings
another untried young player. How assuring 🙁
@Gooner Chris
Did you just copy and paste the story from the link below.
This one aint happening, the reliable source L'Equipe has claimed not contact has been made for Matuidi but he is a player we admire

We could do with more than one signing.. Its funny how were linked with top class players like barry & alonso then will end up buying a unknown & unproven player.
Just checked sky sports web page, nothing written on him
This is shit who is this player ???fuck this I can't stand anymore.
Does anyone else think that he looks a bit like Tracy McGrady of the Houston Rockets?
Just done my rounds on bbc, sky sports and setanta, dont see anything on it. is this more speculation then fact?
it seems that every summer we lose players but this is the first summer where we've lost players who weren't on the downward slope of thier careers and where we didn't seem to have a plan to deal with it. I think Wenger honestly thought Flamini would stay and that he had bought into the “Arsenal Way”. I really don't remember feeling the team was so unprepared. But it's early and following a team passionately is a bit like joining a cult. you gotta faith … even when all the evidence available points you towards atheism.
and the Houston Rockets are? and who on earth joins a cult. dont like you refering to Arsenal as a cult. Its a football club that people support
It was on SSN, several people have confirmed it.
I was being facetious with the cult comment. it's not like we're going to put rolls of quarters in our pockets, shave our heads and don our Nike shoes while we wait for the mothership to land – unless Wenger tells us to.
I heard he is a good player, hopefully we will get him.
Gooner Chris what do you think about Newcastle
You think we will win?
Wenger has started tellig lie about our transfer dealigs:
1. First week of summer, Wenger states he will be bringing in 2-3 players in the next cuople of weeks, maybe one from the Premiership
2. Wenger says ther are hundreds of calls from p3ayers that want to sign for us
2. Wenger says he will sign Nasri before the Euros
3.Wenger says during the Euros that he has brought his cheque book along
4. Wenger says he will bring in an experienced player in before the deadline ( not really a lie but when e said experienced I certainly didnt expect someone as low key as Silvestre
5. After Wenger says he is one short in midfield, he now says we have a good enough squad
HE LOOKS LIKE A GOOD PLAYER
arsenal needs an experienced defensive midfielder who can strongly support cesc and not a kid!who the hell is matuidi.
yemi ogunnoiki……….from nigeria
He is good, no doubt but like most of Wengers recent signings he is very raw. He can't have much experience at only 21(unless he is like Cesc or Nasri). If we do get him its difficult to see him starting. As it is our squad is way too young especially the midfield. Nasri, Cesc, Theo, Song, Denilson, Diaby are all under 22. Only Rosicky is old-ish midfielder and he rarely even plays.
come on Wenger if ur going to sign him fucking sign him, we have 3 days to go till the Transfer window shuts Fiszmam has said wenger has got the funds saw why its taken this long only wenger can tell us this is becoming a joke the guys got cash saw why Inst he strengthening the squad.
*SO SO SO SO SO. HHHHHH
Just give us a player we've heard of before, not Messi och Kaka, but Silva, Alonso or someone that's known outside of his place of birth… please…
NO u need english team spirit for the premiership because when u go up to places like bolton, balckburn u need to fight physical battles which si what enlgish players are good at. They are not technically good but they give 100 percent and will fight to the very end ie gerrard vs middlesbourough?
He has the money to buy but cant afford some players wage demands..
Tbh i'd rather pass on this guy as i cant see him comming in & making a big impact like barry or alonso could have.
Wenger's said he's rotating the squad a little bit for the Newcastle game.. It means that Ade and Toure will start this time instead of being dropped.
I think it will look like this:
Almunia
Sagna – Toure – Gallas – Clichy
Walcott – Cesc – Song – Nasri
Adebayor – Van Persie/Bendtner
Youngguns say there has been no contact yet. Is this news more recent? He will definitely cost a lot. What about the guy Perrin?
I want Djourou, Song and Bendtner to start in place of Toure, Denilson and Adebayor.
Wenger added: “We are out to look, if we find the right players we will do it, one or two.”
Great news
JoeTodd- Where and when did u here this?
http://www.sportinglife.com/football/news/story…
Matuidi is twice the player Gareth Barry is.
Just but someone and get it over with already. Wenger is gonna wait til the 11th hour so he can try get them on the cheap.
Like
all Gooners I am fed up with us being linked with half the midfieders on the planet and nothing happening. Matuidi sounds like he would be very good for Arsenal but we also need the experience of either Barry or Alonso. Lets just buy someone to bolster the squad both in numbers and belief.
u say dat but wen england were in a real battle on a rainy day against croata the english team spirit wilted under pressure and for me as long as the boy is good enough den get him in
anyone else think coquelin will be the new flamini in a year or 2?
