Match Report: Manchester City 3-0 Arsenal
|A downbeat Arsenal side travelled to Manchester without their skipper and eight other Gunners stars including Cesc Fabregas, Emmanuel Adebayor and Kolo Toure.
Without their first choice captain in the squad, Manuel Almunia took on the armband and looked to lead his youthful troops.
Gavin Hoyte was given a surprise start, just as Young Guns and Gooner Talk told you a day before the Premier League clash.

First Half
Arsenal went into this match without the likes of Theo Walcott, Cesc Fabregas, Kolo Toure and Emmanuel Adebayor as well as Gallas and it showed.
City almost took the lead in the 27th minute after a flowing move, which was started by Shaun Wright-Phillips.
He sent Darius Vassell clear and Benjani Mwauwari got a touch to his cross at the back post, only to deflect his effort wide.
Robin van Persie then needed brief treatment six minutes later after being left winded following a challenge from Vincent Kompany.
Arsenal almost took the lead from the free-kick with Joe Hart – who had made a quick recovery from an ankle injury – beating away Samir Nasri’s shot.
The ball broke to Nicklas Bendtner and he cleverly hooked it back to Alex Song. He was clear on goal but sent his effort wide from close range.
Ireland then went on a surging run but there was no one on hand to help him out and Almunia mopped up with ease.
There was a tense, nervous edge to this game, which meant little entertainment for the supporters as half-time approached.
Benjani got on the end of a cross from Wright-Phillips in stoppage time but he sent his header wide.
Immediately afterwards Ireland took advantage of a mix-up between Gael Clichy and Mikael Silvestre to put the home side ahead.
He clipped the ball over Almunia to give City the boost they required going into the second half.
Goal: Steven Ireland (45) – Manchester City 1-0 Arsenal
Second Half
Arsenal were clearly rattled at going behind and within minutes of the second half underway Abou Diaby skipped forward in the 47th minute, only to fire wide of the post.
Four minutes later Van Persie saw his free-kick ruffle the side netting after Micah Richards had been penalised for a challenge on the Dutchman.
City, however, responded and extended their lead with a magnificent goal from Robinho in the 57th minute after some superb work from Wright-Phillips.
The England midfielder won the ball off Van Persie in the middle of the park before releasing a perfect through ball for Robinho.
The Brazilian showed a cool head as Almunia advanced to lob the ball over the goalkeeper for his ninth goal of the season.
Goal: Robinho (57) – Manchester City 2-0 Arsenal
This was now a test of character for Arsenal and Bedntner should have pulled a goal back four minutes later.
He latched on to a ball from substiutute Aaron Ramsey but his weak shot was easily parried by Hart.
Robinho then sent a close-range header wide of the post before finding the next again only for his effort to be ruled out for offside.
Arsenal kept pushing forward and Denilson tried his luck in the 76th minute.
Robinho almost made it 3-0 three minutes later when he latched on to a ball from substitute Elano.
He took it around Almunia only for Djourou to clear his effort off the line.
Van Persie then found the net after clipping the ball out of Hart’s hand but it was disallowed.
Sturridge completed the rout in stoppage time from the penalty spot after being upended by Johan Djourou to add to Arsenal’s misery.
Goal: Daniel Sturridge – Manchester City 3-0 Arsenal
The goal summed up Arsenal’s day and how fitting was it that Arsenal fan Daniel Sturridge was the player who finished the Gunners off.
There is no denying it, a crisis is apparent at Arsenal Football Club.

Let’s roll up our sleeves now. This is even worse an 06/07….Things need to get back to positives again. whether in the league or not, it’s what carries our momentum in other competitions we chase.
3 arsenal fans in the city team today, sturridge, wright phillips and richards.
Gallas was correct but he must go because team mates will not respect a captain who criticises them in public. Also sell Ade and Bentner and buy Kenwyne Jones and Hutelaa and buy David Wheater and Joe Ledley.
Chris and joe remember your old friend LOL
Joe Todd and Chris remember me lads your great friend LOL i told you guys this would happen didn’t I
Like I said previously, I can’t believe a player of such limited ability and personality as Almunia is captaining Arsenal…even if it is on a short term basis. I think it would be a good idea to change up our formation slightly. Playing a narrower 4-3-1-2 with Nasri as the central attacking midfielder. I mean our wingers do nothing but tuck in so what’s the point in having them hug the line for nothing. Look at Nasri’s goals against West Brom, Twente, Everton and Man Utd, all due to his dynamic running through the centre and confident finishing. The sooner… Read more »
LOL James, welcome back. 🙂
hey chris tough one to see i dint have the heart to say anything at all in the second half because when i came back it become 2-0 i was stunnned hats of to u for even writing a post match.. Cheers mate we are still in the hunt by the skin of our teeth as we lost just 1 point today
Thought Nasri was running the show first half. But as a season ticket holder at City with a lot of respect for the gunners and their fans I thought your team played with nothing up front. Bentner looked very average and what’s with the pink boots? I know you had a lot of players out. But your team looked disinterested second half and that is a big concern. Me and my blue mates were trying to come up with the best Arsenal players we have played against and about 6 people around us kept butting in with other players. Good… Read more »
Cheers Martin, it’s interesting to have an opposition-member’s view.
I agree with what you said, Nasri was probably the best Arsenal player on the pitch. van Persie and Bendtner didn’t work well together either.
Well done on your win, it was thoroughly deserved, we’ll get you back at the Emirates next year! 😉
Oh, and as for the pink boots, read this article. 😀

[…] Manchester City 3-0 Arsenal […]
we need at least 3 players.
CB Marvin Compper GErmany Hoffenheim, Striker Benzema, Midfielder Yaya Toure or Gökhan Inler or De Rossi
Sack Bendtner no Arsenal Quality, Gallas and Eboue
Pls Arsene spend in January to get ar least FA Cup or finally Championsleague
Cesc for Captain!!!!!!!
I love how we make Gallas into a villain for saying that Arsenal’s players have no passion and backbone and then these arrogant children prove how he is right. Putting Bendtner, Denilson, Silvestre all out on the field after that criminal display against Villa is a joke. Giving the armband to Manuel Alfreakingmunia of all people is a joke. No, it is wrong to push Arsene out the door – he is a top class manager and has done wondrous things for this club. However, he is becoming a poor judge of his team’s talent, especially if he thinks that… Read more »
