Match Preview: Burnley v Arsenal (Carling Cup)
|After their heroics against Chelsea at the weekend, a completely different Arsenal side travels up to Burnley for a tough-looking Carling Cup tie at Turf Moor.
In League Cup games away from home (excluding the two legged semi-finals), Arsenal haven’t lost in their last 7 outings, with a 0-1 reverse at Manchester United in 2004 the last time they were knocked out on their travels. Furthermore, the Gunners came here in the FA Cup 3rd Round last season and were comfortable 2-0 winners so the trip to Lancashire should hold no fears for the youngsters this evening.
And though Burnley are undoubtedly one of the best sides in the Championship, this wont be the physical encounter that Arsenal sides traditionally struggle with in the north of England. Midfielders Chris Eagles & Chris McCann set the tempo with a measured passing game in midfield and this has been very effective in the Championship, lifting them to 4th in the table – and they are unbeaten at home in their last 11 games (in all competitions).
Though their offensive game got them back into the match at Stamford Bridge, the pace of Carlos Vela & Nicklas Bendtner is likely to give the less mobile Steven Caldwell & Clarke Carlisle nightmares at the back and they won’t be able to gobble up the aerial bombardment that they are used to in the second tier.
The Clarets also have a key league game at 5th place Sheffield United on Saturday so some of the first team may not complete the full 90 minutes, whereas the Arsenal kids will have no such concerns.
Mikael Silvestre, Carlos Vela and Nicklas Bendtner are all likely to start for Arsenal after not being involved in Sunday’s win over Chelsea. Danish striker Bendtner came on as a late substitute, but is set to cut it out with his highly-rated striker partner Vela for the first time since the thrashing of Sheffield United two months ago.
Predicted Starting XI
Fabianski
Rodgers – Hoyte – Silvestre – Gibbs
Wilshere – Randall – Ramsey – Merida
Bendtner – Vela

I think this will be the closest game so far, even though there probably the worst opposition we will come/have come up against. We have nothing to lose with the kids and they don’t have really anything to lose. It will be interesting but I think we will wear them out and come out on top.
Is it on T.V? and if so, when is kick off?
Yep, it’s on Sky Sports 1, kick-off is at 7:45 mate.
Or you can follow the action live on GoonerTalk TV 😉
I’ll watch it on both, T.V is right next to me anyway. Sky in my living room and Sky in my computer room. :3
subs?
i for one dont think this will be a walk over as some people seem to think i feel we are going to sweat for the result because in previous games our defensive partnership of Song and Djourou has been immense repelling everything and anything…now Silvestre and Hoyte havent played together so might need to work some understanding adding yung Coquelin to that we have two new components into the back four which aint the best thing to start changing…
but i feel going forward if we can make those triangles we will worry the Mccanns and Eagles so much that they wont place too much impulse on attacking.
we have to score early or not concede early and um sure we will prevail we wont have to worry mush bout aerial bombardment from open play but i think at set pieces Caldwell and Carlisle as well as Duff will be a factor so no conceding silly free kicks
C’mon you Gooners
VICTORIA CONCORDIA CRESCIT…
Interesting comment casicky, I agree, it certainly won’t be a walkover.

On topic : Bentdner (sp) Is fucking shit. 🙁
why does bentdner keep getting played?? he is pretty awful at finishing most of the time, would have much rather seen jay simpson up front
It’s 2-0 against us mate. Dnt u think the young guns now feels its alwayz goin 2 b an easy ride. Having Jay Simpson start with Nick on d bench 2 me is d best selection. Any news on latest player transfers n do I get 2 pay 2 watch on GoonerTalk TV? Nice work U r doin mate. Harmed 4rm LASU in Lagos,Nigeria
Bendtner,Rodgers,Randall all poor tonight!
aah well, if this game is useful for one thing then it is surely to be that bendtner should never play for any arsenal side again..thats for sure. he is worse at finishing than adebayor and that is saying something, cannot wait till DuDu is back..
Arsenal are still amazing.
x
fuck…. 🙁 we just lost
i say bentdner to spartak moscow for 5 mil. and a good signing instead.
hoped wenger did something at halftime to motivate the players, but nothing happened… sad to see spurs still in the competition
Shit happens…and that shit is Bendtner! Still very talented bunch of kids and this is a good learning process for them. But I highly highly doubt Rodgers and Randall will have a future with us. I think we’ve tried to sell Rodgers but teams have turned him down. Bendtner should go on loan to Bayern Munich in exchange for Podolski.
FUCKING GOOD JOB YOU DONT FIELD THOSE USELESS CUNTS AGAINST BETTER TEAMS LIKE MAN U ELSE YOU GET BATTERED EVEN WORSE
LOLOLOLOLOLOL GOONER WANKERS
You jealous your youths are worthless pieces of shit?? Wilshere alone will tear through ManUre team of cock suckin’ youths!
sell bendtner to burnley 4.5mil…crap..
wht the hell he’s thinking of while just 1 on 1 with jensen..it pretty easy for bendtner to score bcoz he think he is ‘world class’ player..pinky!!
