Barca captain Puyol denies Cesc quotes

Barcelona’s World Cup winner Carlos Puyol has rubbished quotes from The Sun where he reportedly claimed that Arsenal “haven’t matched” Cesc Fabregas’ expectations.

Throughout the summer no fewer than 8 Barca players have spoken out on how Fabregas should join the Catalan club.

Puyol, 32, reportedly said:

“I wonder how intelligent it is keeping a player who doesn’t want to be there. After seven years of great service, I thought Arsenal could have granted him his dream move.

“Cesc has given everything to Arsenal to try to win a trophy but they haven’t matched his expectations.”

However, the Blaugrauna skipper has denied the quotes attributed to him, telling his personal blog:

“Hi everyone, these past days a British news media outlet has published some statements supposedly mine that are totally false, I just saw them and I can guarantee that I have not said anything nor talked to anybody about this subject. Cheers.”

Cesc could have nipped this in the bud weeks ago by saying “I am not moving to Barca this year”. Simple enough you’d have thought. He could have done the same thing each time one of the Barca cnuts mouthed off to the press. He could have said it when the put the Barca shirt on him. He hasn’t. He has refused to commit to Arsenal or confirm that he wants to stay for another year. He can’t claim ignorance of all this speculations, so there only one conclusion: he wants to go. He should have the guts to just… Read more »

It’s the Sun. They are trash along with most of the English press. It is the press who have repeatedly hyped this whole conflict. You should go back and read the full interviews with players on both sides of the issue and you will find that, excluding Xavi, no one has said anything worse than “Cesc is a great player, we played in the youth team together, of course I would love to play with him again.” The media, blogs included, have just been regurgitating exaggerated headline after exaggerated headline and creating an endless cycle of falsehoods and misconceptions. It… Read more »

Goonanon is exactly correct. Stop believing what these morally and intellectually bankrupt papers are trying to sell and do some research and thinking of your own. I can understand people being upset about this situation, but at least direct your anger at the guilty parties. Certainly Cesc should be able to just come out and make a statement declaring his intentions for the future, but what has that accomplished the other 200 times he has done it? Absolutely nothing. The papers will spin every single comment exactly how they please, regardless of the player’s intentions, so Cesc is simply doing… Read more »

@Goonanon: That is undoubtable true, the press ask the questions looking for any response with which they can exaggerate or just blatently bullshit.
Was this quote not picked up from spanish sources? They usually are. I’d say anything coming from spain is propaganda instigated in the main by Barcelona themselves. Even captain caveman coming out to deny these quotes performs the same result of bringing attention to the subject. It’s been a constant drip feed since april and that is no coincidence.

I think there is more to this then meets the eye. Wengers contract ends next year, Cesc has 4 or 5 years left on his, however I dont think he would want to stay at Arsenal if Wenger goes, like most of the players there to be honest.

I think this has much to do with Wenger signing a new contract.

@Goonanon:

Goonanon is spot on. Incredible how English fans still believe their tabloids. While in Spain they at the most invent transfer rumours, in England they’re inventing whole interviews! David Villa this weekend also denied having talked with The Daily Star although they had a long interview on Sunday full of quotes on the future of Fernando Torres. Baseline is: a Spanish player will never ever give an interview to an English tabloid.

@Nommosi:
No, it wasn’t picked up from Spanish sources. The Puyol interview was according to The Sun an “exclusive” interview.

Cheers Culé1971. I think Jack Straw also nails it on the head too. I’d add to the mix that Barca never really expected to sign Cesc, they would have liked to if they could, especially the players, but the fact of the matter is the board knew full well about their financial problems and put in a ridiculous bid of £29m knowing full well it would be turned down. As Tony over @ Untold concluded it was probably primarily made as a way to distract away from their in house problems, but with a hope it will unsettle Cesc and… Read more »

Unless Cesc steps up and gives us fans some confidence as to where he stands. And not some stupid Spanish riddle of an answer, I for one will not be comfortable with him being our skipper.

@Paniro: There is no indication that Wenger will not sign a new contract. He is always very patient with things like these and in his eyes it’s probably still early and there are more important things to conclude before he has to deal with that. Also, not only is it the clubs anniversary next season but why would he give up his project just as it begins bloom, and where would he go where he can satisfy his methods of control and still remain at the top level?

I propose that Arsenal fans World wide post letters once a week for the next four weeks to UEFA & FIFA complaining about Barcelona FC’s ‘tapping up’ of Cesc Fabregas. Also post a letter just once to Arsenal FC requesting that they formally complain to UEFA & FIFA. I have drawn up 3 template letters that I will email to willing participants. All you need to do is type in your own Name & Address before printing off & posting. Momentum will be boosted by you forwarding the email to every one of your Arsenal FC fan family & friends,… Read more »

Cheers Nommosi. I agree that Barcelona never really thought they’d be able to purchase Fabregas this summer, and that they’re trying to lay the groundwork for a future move. The other important factor to remember were the Barcelona presidential elections, which set this whole mess in motion. Laporta started it with a last ditch effort to sign the player he had lost 6 years earlier. It was stricly a self-promotional ploy to add a little luster to the end of his otherwise illustrious regime. He also knew that he wouldn’t have to deal with the financial fallout directly, so what… Read more »

The sad thing is that the prem league is now by far the most challenging and difficult league to compete in, and if/when he returns to spain he’ll never be able to say he succeeded here. That’s kinda what pisses me off, that he shouldn’t even contemplate leaving until his fulfilled and experienced success with us.
I also think that whenever we do sell him we should have a buyback clause added so he can at least come back and finish his career with us =D

I still dont understand if barca players are tapping up cesc, its not considered that the club is tapping up cesc. Are the barca players not staff too? Dont dont they work for barca too? What is considered as tapping up???

Arsenal are going with a PR Company that will move them away and perhaps into competition with SKY. The rubbish about Cesc and Barca players in the British press is a deliberate anti-Arsenal muck rake because of that. We won’t play their silly games or go into slavery/debt and the Lords and Masters don’t like it. Puyol, Messi et al have probably not said what has been reported but if you ask them ‘ do you want to play with Cesc at some point’ they are bound to say ‘yes’. Everyone (but us) is worried about Arsenal dominating World Football… Read more »

dude, now that puyol denies he made any such statement, and the sun quote him to have made such a statement, is it in any ways possible to sue the sun’s arse and make them pay for trying to unsettle our asset using lies??
after all, it has been unsettling our asset and trying to drive down the price of our asset!!! Just like in a normal business unsettling the share price!
just my thoughts, i dont know anything about the law in the U.K!

This topic is fast becoming boring people. What will be will be.

Very simply Barca must meet Arsenal’s valuation of the player and then the deal can be done. The end.

@Nommossi, you make valid point throughout this topic. I for one do not understand why Arsene would leave such a great project, however if that was me why not sign an extension before now. Past has shown yes he does wait until the last minute, however lack of facts causes doubts and media will jump all over it soon enough.
In regards to the last few comments, what is this about the media group vs sky, this is the first i have heard of this?

My goodness, you guys are stupid. Blaming everyone else but the source. ‘Ooh it’s the Sun’ ‘No it’s UEFA’ or ‘Barca players’. Do you honestly any of these headlines would be possible without one man’s desire to leave? No. Cesc wants to go. Get you’re fcuking heads out of your arses and start smelling the coffee instead of eating and then spouting your shite.

Deluded wankers.

Anyone else think that Barca may themselves be trying to lessen the noise as Arsenal have told them they won’t discuss with them while these repeated efforts to use the media are going on? Why else would Puyol care if this was reported about him?

@Donnyfan1-I was aware about this kind of thing. But I didnt think Sky would take up to the Speculation. I mean, if you read Fabregas’s main words in the papers when it all started (tried to find the source but there is literally so much speculation that I cannot find the origin) but it was something like “yes, I would like to return to barcelona”…now that to the papers is HES OFF and I aint kidding, the head line in the metro literaly was ‘FABREGAS: I’m Off’ and all he said was above and thats it. @Arsenalgunner27: I could not agree more, we should encourage all Arsenal fans to not buy a single newspaper, nor click on any online papers from english press. That is the reason for all the crap we read about Cesc etc, they print some foolish story based on nothing, and for every click on the nett they earn money through addvertising. We should never read any arsenal related news on newspapers and run them out of business. I know several other fans who do the same, and we should do it the whole year through, not just in the silly season.… Read more »
