Gervinho & Samba on the verge of signing for Arsenal
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is closing in on his first major signings of the summer, with Lille striker Gervinho and Blackburn defender Chris Samba both on the verge of joining the club on long-term deals.
Wenger has identified 27-year-old Samba as the man to solve Arsenal’s defensive worries, while prolific attacker Gervinho is expected to increase competition for places offensively with Nicklas Bendtner close to leaving Emirates Stadium.
Highly-rated frontman Gervinho favours a move to the Gunners ahead of moneybags Manchester City, which has made a late play for his transfer. Lille chief Frédéric Paquet admitted earlier this week Gervinho was in talks with Arsenal and today told L’Equipe that they “will listen to Arsenal’s proposal.”
Meanwhile, the welcome addition of 6 ft 4 giant Samba alongside Thomas Vermaelen looks likely to provide vital strength in a previous area of weakness for Arsenal, and prove a major stepping stone towards a Premier League title challenge when the season kicks-off again in August.
So far, Arsenal’s only summer signing has been the £1m deal for Charlton youngster Carl Jenkinson.

@xNabzZ: Very good comment. Bendtner wants Champions League football and there are very few clubs in the competition who are short of strikers. Whether he sees Ligue 1 as a step-down is another story, however.
I’ll be glad if these came in but will still be sad if some…names no longer necessary…also leave so we are spared the misery of ever seeing them play for Arsenal ever again!
Ahhh… when can we see the “real” signing? Fans might be exhausted waiting and waiting. Probably Wenger is waiting till August to sign some players… LOL…

I agree with Arsenal Avenue, Samba and Gervinho???? Is this the step up in talent we need to win the league, Samba is slow on the turn and on the ball poor, he is great in the air but then soo is Djourou, as for Gervinho he is a very skillful player but plays off the wing, so a poor replacement for Nasri then.
I wouldnt be surprised if both arent even regulars, what has happened to Benzema and Falcao?????

Im sorry but Djourou standing at 6ft 4 is pathtic in the air, he has no desire to get to the ball first and usually waits for the ball to come to him. Watch him closely as you will see.

Yes let’s move our best defender out of his best position because we want Cahill and Samba? Surely a better option to those who want Clichy gone would be sign one of Cahill/Samba and then sign a LEFT BACK someone who naturally plays there, Verm can play there but Cesc can play as striker doesn’t mean it’s a good idea.

Two Good players that will solve a few problems in our team, all we need now is to sign Hazzard and Benzema, possible Eto cause he wants to play in the premier leauge,cant see him coming to Arsenal wage demands maybe to high so chelsea or Man City more then likely will pick him up! Man utd might join the battle that will mean Berbatov might leave,as for chelsea that will make Drogba or Kalou available..Its going to be a busy summer…Cesc will stay I believe after what Barca want to offer 30 million for our beloved captain..Samir might stay and play the rest of the contract? any news on this??

brilliant hopefully this is the begining with Cahill following shortly. I do hope we get Parker and Falcao plus William and really strengthen our challenge for next season in all competitions.

two centre backs (Samba and one other) a holding midfielder, song isnt good enough, hazard and a striker. That is regardless of who comes and goes, obviously if fabregas and nasri go then we’ll need more than that.

I think we will only buy one CB, either Cahill or Samba, with Kos, Djourou and Squallachi as backup. we also have Bartley, but he will probably go on loan. If Clichy leaves then a left back will come in as well. As for our attacking department i think Gervinho might be it unless others leave. Expect some promotions from within as well (Landsbury, Frimpong).

Player (Bendtner) plus cash for that big centrehalf in dortmund, and samba. Vermaelen on the left back – someone who knows the offside rule, bye bye Cliché. Then bring in Hazard and Gervinho and we’re set.
would prefer cahill over samba if it’s one or the other… samba is slow and clumsy so will not suit the high line that well

Samba would be a good buy. He’s just the kind of solid defender we need. Can’t believe people still want Squillaci as backup. He’s awful. Get rid of him now. Gervinho? Well, I’m sure he looks great in France but he’ll get found out in the EPL I’m fearing. Good call for a promotion for Lansbury. Really want to see more of him this season.

@grey ghost: Looks like he will not get a work permit and will have to go on loan for another year. So it is unlikely he will be able to play for us next year

I am really glad that Gervinho is coming to Arsenal and not to Manchester City despite their late bid and the attempt to lure him because of big money. They might be able to pay him big money but they will definitely ruin his career if the indications of how it ends for every star player from Rhobino to now Dheko is anything to go by. It also goes to show that this is a block that’s level headed and has his priorities right. It’s something someone like Nasri should emulate. Nasri is a great player but he should not let this go into his head. He should play it cool like Van Persie.
In response to some of what I’ve read here:
– Rosicky is apparently Fabregas’s closest friend on the team they will not sell him off in fear of driving out Fabregas
– Eto and Song do not get along, Eto will not be at the Emirates anytime soon.
Everyone gets caught up naming a starting 11 for the season when what I believe makes more sense is to have options. From 2 perspectives:
1) You can choose the perfect 11 to counter whatever team you are playing. With Samba, Vermaelen, Djouoru, Kol, Sagna, Clichy, (Cahil?) you can choose a big strong backline for a team like Stoke, or a more attacking, passing minded backline for someone like West Brom, or mix and match as you see fit. You also have the option do something like bring Djouoru off the bench in place of Wilshire to play defensive mid to lock down a 1-0 game in the 80′ min.
2) The other team is constantly guessing what you are going to do. They have to pregame in several different ways because they don’t know what back line you will be putting out against them.
I think the frontline will remain much the same as last season except Gervinho for Bendtner. I if Wenger can bring in a budget defensive midfielder I believe he will otherwise Frimpong will get thrown to the wolves in the event 2 of Wilshire, Song, Diaby get hurt.

Arsenal are facing a really tough start to the 2011-2012 premier league campaign. And if they carry their lethargic performances and end-of-last-season form into next season, the gunners will be in mid-table by October. With Man Utd, Chelsea, Man City, Spurs and Liverpool heavily investing in squad-strengthening, there can only be one top-four casualty come May 2012! Which is why stingy Arsene Wenger and his rapacious Board should stop posturing, get serious NOW and sign some quality players by August 2011 – or esle….

If rumours are correct and we buy Samba and Cahill I do think Wenger might go for a 3-5-2 or 3-4-3 type formation. Looking at the players in the squad it would suit them better too as we don’t have any natural wingers. Sagna and Baines(?!) could do the wing back role.

hi im a rovers fans i got dropped into this site by mistake the latest on samba is that we have offered him a massive contract which will make him clearly the highest paid rovers players, the actually reality is that Samba is probably a 75% chance of leaving rovers and the only club he has expressed an interest in according to local papers is Arsenal i say good luck to the giant man he is already a ledgend at rovers and i would not begrudge him playing champions league football next season
i think sincerely arsene wenger, should by now realise that he lost the premiership race five times because he lacks a solid bench,how do explain we call ourself arsenal and we dont have enough arsenal in the teams armoury,so much guns and no bullets,we need a filip melo in de middle and a tall agressive striker
