Arshavin & Song set for contract talks

Arsenal will continue talks with duo Andrey Arshavin and Alex Song this week, in the hope of extending the midfielder’s contracts.

Arshavin, who impressed in a cameo role during Sunday’s 2-1 win over Sunderland, has a contract which runs until June 2013, prompting manager Arsene Wenger to put a 1-year extension on the table.

Interest for both players is expected to be high, with Arshavin in particular attracting suitors from across Europe including oil-backed Russian side Anzhi Makhachkala.

Speaking after the Sunderland game, 30-year-old Arshavin said Russia’s qualification for Euro 2012 has left him in ‘high spirits’ ready to perform for the Gunners.

“I’m in high spirits right now. You know, after the game against Slovakia I feel like a load has been taken off my mind”, said Arshavin.

Representatives of Theo Walcott and Robin van Persie are also expected to negotiate extensions in the coming months, with the latter reaffirming his commitment to the club in his Official Matchday programme column at the weekend.

Meanwhile, left-back Andre Santos will continue in defence ahead of Wednesday’s Champions League group stage clash away to Marseille, with Kieran Gibbs unlikely to be risked due to an inflammation of his stomach muscles.

Thomas Vermaelen has been improving in training sessions but is still not fully ready, while Aaron Ramsey is expected to be included in the travelling squad after recovering from a minor hamstring injury.
