Benik Afobe's impresses on Reading debut
|Championship high-flyers Reading moved four points clear of West Ham yesterday afternoon following a 3-1 over Ian Holloway’s Blackpool side.
On-loan Arsenal youngster Benik Afobe made his debut in the game, playing 70 minutes before being replaced by Simon Church.
19-year-old Afobe, who joined the Royals several days ago, impressed the crowd with his impressive link-up play and strength on the ball.
Highlights of Afobe’s debut can be seen below:

I am always happy to see a young English kid come through at Arsenal, but that short film showed a young kid with no touch, no composure, and importantly no awareness about movement. The few times he did successfully find a team mate with a lay off he just stopped and watched. Very Andy Carroll, very English, and on this evidence, not good enough for a club like Arsenal. I don’t like writing anyone off after one viewing. But generally Youtube videos are designed to make a player look better than they are. This video made him look like a plodder. And given the impact of the likes of Ryu and Wilshere in the Premiership, with this showing in the league below I can’t see Afobe getting much first team experience.
More like heskey. He does not attack the goal frequent enough for me.
Looks like a proper no.9 for the Gunners! Hope he turns out very well and return more pumped up than ever! We’ve been unlucky with our no.9s (remember Jeffers?) before and it seems like it’s a jinxed no for Arsenal. But this boy, born n bred the Arsenal way cld be the answer… *fingers crossed*
I’ve seen Benik play alot of matches now and I believe he could run the forward line for Arsenal in years to come.
Big, Strong, Quick, Can hold the ball up well, Great eye for goal. He has most things what Strikers need. A real talent!!!
I look forward to seeing him in the Arsenal Number 9 Shirt!
Hope he has a successful spell at Reading. Still can’t see him being good enough for Arsenal. Lays the ball off and then waits for something to happen. Needs to be busy around the box which he isn’t. Still he is young and will learn. Needs to watch RVP more often and learn. He needs to be quicker, plots too much. However, good luck to him in his career but it should not be at Arsenal.
