Arsenal hope to sign Szczesny competition in the summer

Wojciech Szczesny

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has warned Wojciech Szczesny that his no.1 spot in goal ‘isn’t guaranteed’, with the Frenchman expected to scour the summer transfer window for an established goalkeeper.

The Gunners’ goalkeeping responsibilities have been shared between Vito Mannone, Damian Martinez and Polish international Szczesny so far this season.

Wenger is understood to have concerns over the performances of all three – specifically Polish international Szczesny – and is hopeful that the club can secure the signing of a proven shot stopper as competition for Szczesny at the end of the season.

Lukas Fabianski is rated as the all-round, best shot stopper at the club but has seen his time in north London ravaged by injuries and several costly errors.

Meanwhile, 22-year-old Szczesny was involved in extra training sessions last year with goalkeeping coach Gerry Peyton in a bid to cut out his inconsistencies which include erratic distribution and positioning.

Several goalkeeper’s names have been linked to Arsenal since the turn of the year including Stoke shot stopper Asmir Begovic, Wigan ‘keeper Ali Al-Habsi and experienced Swansea goalkeeper Michel Vorm.
