Arsenal dealt blow as Bayern ‘agree deal’ for Mats Hummels
|
Arsenal are set to miss out on Borussia Dortmund defender Mats Hummels, with the German expected to reject offers from the Gunners, Liverpool and Manchester United in favour of a move to Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich this summer.
The 27-year-old’s contract is set to expire in the summer of 2017 and it was believed that he was undecided whether he would sign a new deal with Thomas Tuchel’s side or not, although German outlet Bild now report that Bayern have agreed a deal with rivals Dortmund believed to be in the region of £23m in order to prise Hummels away.
Famously, both Robert Lewandowski and Mario Gotze made moves away from Dortmund to their German rivals and it appears as though Bayern, who will also have the arrival of Carlo Ancelotti to consider, will have yet another World Cup winner on their books.
The news comes as a big blow to Arsenal, Liverpool and United with the three Premier League sides looking to strengthen this summer ahead of the new campaign.
Big blow for Arsenal who desperately need a strong but mobile centre back to work in tandem with Koscielny or Chambers. Put bluntly Mertesacker (lack of mobility) and Gabriel (lack of strength) are liabilities for Arsenal. Hummels fits the centre back mould Arsenal are needing perfectly and it’s a shame the club didn’t seem to make any aggressive moves for him. Hopefully Arsenal will target Veltman of Ajax now that Hummels is no longer an option.
