Watford have had an approach for Calum Chambers turned down by Arsenal, the London Evening Standard have reported.

It’s believed that the Hornets looked to sign the England under-21 international on a season-long loan deal but saw their approach for Chambers turned down by Arsene Wenger.

Chambers rarely featured for the Gunners last season, making a number of substitute appearances in the league while being a regular in the FA Cup, although the 21-year-old admitted that while he has not expressed a desire to leave the club, he ‘just wants to play games’ on a regular basis.

“For me, I just want to play games, so, yeah, that’s it for me.

“But at the moment I am not thinking too much about next season, I just want to go and enjoy my summer. Then we’ll get back at it soon.”

Southampton are also believed to be interested in the defender – although a strong pre-season could mean that Chambers fights his way into the Arsenal first-team, with Wenger looking to shift the ex-Saints defender into the middle of the park as opposed to the right.

With Hector Bellerin as the senior starting defender on the right side of the defence, Carl Jenkinson is likely to play back-up to the Spaniard once he returns from injury, with Mathieu Debuchy likely to make a permanent transfer away.
