Former Arsenal defender Johan Djourou has claimed that new signing Granit Xhaka will bring an array of qualities to the team.
The Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder signed for the north London side in May for a fee believed to be in the region of at least £30m after weeks of speculation linking him with a move to the Emirates Stadium.
Having played in the Bundesliga together – albeit for different sides, Swiss teammates Djourou and Xhaka have plenty of experience between them and the ex-Arsenal defender, speaking to Goal, discussed what the 23-year-old will be able to bring to the club’s midfield.
“I think Granit has a lot of talent. He showed [against Albania] that he can bring his class and qualities to Arsenal.
“He’s a very aggressive player and he can be a very key player for the club. Arsenal have so many good players in that position. Don’t forget that there’s also Jack Wilshere, Aaron Ramsey, Francis Coquelin and Santi Cazorla. It will be good to have some competition because he’s a great player.
“Next season is going to be more open [in the Premier League] and harder to win the league because teams are going to get new players, new managers, new ideas and philisophies. Arsenal has always been thereabouts and in the top four so hopefully it will be their year.”
Xhaka was awarded Switzerland’s Man of the Match in their first game of Euro 2016 after a commanding midfield performance against a tough Albania side.
Gunners supporters will have an opportunity to see Xhaka in a competitive match when they take on Liverpool in their first game of the Premier League season, with the fixture list announced on Wednesday morning.
