21 years ago today everything changed for Arsenal

On 20th June 1995, exactly 21-years ago, Arsenal completed the signing of Dennis Bergkamp and made history.

While the Dutchman was a centre forward by trade, he won’t necessarily be remembered for his powerful goalscoring prowess or fox in the box like ability.

Bergkamp scored arguably some of the league’s greatest ever strikes and spearheaded an attack alongside Thierry Henry in 2003/04 which went on to create history by becoming the first ever side to go unbeaten for a whole season in the Premier League – now described as the ‘Invincibles’.

The 47-year-old is lauded by many as the greatest footballer to ever play for Arsenal and having joined for as little as £7.5m in the summer of 1995, may be seen as the club’s greatest ever bargain and certainly ranks amongst Bruce Rioch’s most impressive achievements.

Bergkamp scored 120 goals in 423 appearances for the north London side and could go on to reunite with partner-in-crime Henry as the two leading men of Arsenal once more.

What a signing and what a man – 21 years to the day.
