Arsenal take highly-rated goalkeeper on two-week trial

Arsenal have taken highly-rated goalkeeper Guy Smit on a two-week trial after the 20-year-old decided not to extend his contract with NEC Nijmegen.
Smit is now out-of-contract with the Dutch side and has a number of sides chasing his signature, although it’s been revealed by Dutch news outlet De Gelderlander that it is the north London side who lead the chase and have handed the player a two-week trial to impress.
The move could see any of Matt Macey, Emiliano Martinez, Hugo Keto or Deyan Iliev depart the Emirates Stadium on either a permanent or loan deal, with the youth stars all vying for a place in the first-team.

It’s unlikely that Smit would go straight into the first-team, with the futures of Wojciech Szczesny and David Ospina still needing to be confirmed, although the youngster did reveal that he is determined to impress.
“This is an opportunity I have to seize.”
The Dutchman has continued to train at NEC Nijmegen for fitness purposes despite no longer being a member of the side and spent time on loan at Chris Houghton’s Brighton and Hove Albion, although no deal was agreed between the two parties.
