Arsenal reward defender’s loyalty by naming him new captain

Arsenal are to name Per Mertesacker as the club’s captain ahead of the new season, according to GoonerTalk’s Chris Wheatley.

The German international has been at the club since 2011 and was vice-captain to Mikel Arteta before the midfielder retired, making him the natural selection to take over in the leading role.

Mertesacker is arguably the most experienced of all Arsenal’s players and is expected to start the season alongside Laurent Koscielny, who has been made vice-captain.

The Frenchman has been subject to speculation linking him with a move to Bayern Munich – with it believed that Carlo Ancelotti is making signing him for Bayern Munich a priority signing.

Both Petr Cech and Theo Walcott have been made options to be captain if both Mertesacker and Koscielny are unavailable, perhaps hinting that the England international will be staying at the club beyond the end of the summer transfer window.

The Gunners resumed training at London Colney a couple of weeks ago and have their first pre-season game up against Lens on Friday.
