Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka has joined up with the team to report for his first ever day of training, the club has confirmed.
The 23-year-old had an extended break from football after playing at the 2016 European Championships with Switzerland – being knocked out in the round of 16 by Robert Lewandowski’s Poland on penalties.
It was reported that Xhaka had been keeping fit during his holidays by training in Kosovo – something that supporters will love to hear, clearly showing his vast appetite for the game.
Xhaka joined Arsenal prior to the beginning of Euro 2016 for a fee of over £30m – making him the third most expensive player in the club’s history, behind Alexis Sanchez and German international Mesut Ozil.
Speaking to the club’s official website, Arsene Wenger confirmed that he was happy with the options he has in midfield after signing Xhaka, with the likes of Francis Coquelin, Jack Wilshere and Sanit Cazorla available options ahead of the new campaign.
“[Xhaka brings] his passing ability to play through the lines from deep positions, his work rate, and he’s good in the air.
“He’s a young boy as well, 23 years old. There’s a lot to come from him. We lost three midfielders: Flamini, Rosicky and Arteta, and numbers-wise we are quite solid in midfield now.
“Elneny had a big impact when he came here, Coquelin was injured for a long time and is back. Cazorla will come back, Wilshere is back… so we are solid in midfield.”
Arsenal begin their Premier League campaign against Liverpool on August 14th at the Emirates Stadium.
