Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has revealed the reason behind leaving Gabriel behind for the pre-season trip to France, where they drew 1-1 against Lens.

The Gunners went behind in the first-half but managed to get themselves back in the game after Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s classy finish late on.

Gabriel has had a summer away from football after failing to earn a call-up to Brazil’s Copa America squad and trained all week with Arsenal ahead of the tie against Lens.

However, speaking to the media as reported by the club’s official website, Wenger revealed that the Brazilian will not make the trip to face MLS All-Stars and Chivas Guadalajara because of tonsillitis and was left behind for that reason only.

“I left Gabriel behind today because he has tonsillitis and is infected. He cannot travel.”

Meanwhile, Wenger also spoke on Alexis Sanchez’s return – who won the Copa America with Chile but picked up what looked a terrible ankle injury in the final.

“Alexis will not go either because he had an ankle injury. That is not too bad but I will leave him behind as well.”

Arsenal begin the Premier League season against Liverpool on August 14th at the Emirates Stadium and it’s expected that Alexis will be back in time, although the likes of Olivier Giroud, Laurent Koscielny, Aaron Ramsey and Mesut Ozil will not be ready after long campaigns at the European Championships with their respective countries.
