Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny has rejoined AS Roma on a season-long loan, the club’s official website has confirmed.

The 26-year-old spent last year at the Italian club and impressed, especially once Luciano Spalletti was appointed as boss and became an integral part of their bid to finish inside the top four – which they did successfully.

Szczesny will, however, face stiff competition from Alisson, who signed for Roma from Internacional earlier this summer and acknowledged himself that his time at the club will be challenged by the Poland international.

The disappointing news for both Szczesny and Arsenal supporters who were hoping to see him be a success in north London is that the move is likely to spell the end of his time at the club, with Roma possessing an option to buy him for just €16m – having paid €1m to take him for the 2016/17 campaign.

With both David Ospina and Petr Cech happy to contend with one another for the no.1 spot between the sticks and the likes of Matt Macey and Emiliano Martinez coming through the ranks, the Gunners have a plethora of options to consider.
