Arsenal legend and Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson has given his opinion over Arsenal’s upcoming Premier League tie with champions Leicester City.
Following Arsenal’s embarrassing 4-3 defeat at the hands of Liverpool in their opening fixture of the season, the Gunners will be looking to pick up their first points of the new campaign. Merson, speaking in his weekly prediction column for Sky Sports argues that his old side need to kick off strongly now to avoid fighting an uphill battle later on in the season.
“Arsenal have to win this match. People will say there are still 36 games left after this, but you can’t afford to fall six points behind. Come the end of the season, playing catch-up takes its toll.”
The pundit also explained that Leicester are in a similar position to Arsenal in that they also lost their opening game and need to get their first win quickly so that they can settle into the season.
“It’s a similar story for Leicester because you don’t want to start off as champions and lose your first two games. No one had ever lost their first game as champions, and if you then lose your next, all of a sudden your momentum has gone.”
However, due to the lacklustre showing of Arsenal’s defenders against Liverpool, Merson does not predict that his former side will win against the champions and believes that the game will end as a 2-2 draw.
“This is a big football match and I think there will be goals. Last season, Wes Morgan and Robert Huth blocked every shot they jumped in front of, and I don’t think that will happen again.
“Arsenal can’t defend, we know that, so I’m going for a score draw.”
