Arsenal have suffered a blow in their bid to sign a defender with the news that Atletico Madrid will not budge on their demand of €65m for Jose Gimenez.
The 21-year-old defender has been heavily linked with a move to the north London side this summer, although it’s believed that their primary target is Shkodran Mustafi, with Valencia believed to be willing to part ways with their central defender for around €30m.
However, talks appear to have stalled at this stage and with less than 10 days to go of the summer transfer window, Arsenal have begun to look elsewhere and identified Gimenez as a potential option.
It doesn’t look as though he will sign though, with Atletico refusing to sell for less than the Uruguayan’s buy-out clause of €65m and Arsene Wenger unwilling to spend that much on him.
It’s likely that talks with Mustafi will continue and that Arsenal aren’t really interested in Gimenez. They may well have enquired about his availability but upon being told that he won’t leave for less than his buy-out clause, are likely to have ended any potential interest there and then.
