German club confirm interest in Per mertesacker

Werder Bremen sporting director, Frank Baumann has revealed that the German club are interested in re-signing the Arsenal’s club captain, according to the Express.

Although Mertesacker was made club captain this summer, it has been a bittersweet season so far. The ex-German international picked up a serious injury in the summer, while Arsenal have bought fellow defenders Rob Holding and the ever-impressive Shkodran Mustafi – who has taken his place in the first XI.

Mertesacker’s contract runs out next summer and has revealed that he would be open to a return to the Bundesliga, amid interest from Hannover and Werder Bremen (h/t the Independent).

‘I am a person who likes to create options for himself. Of course, I ask myself what would make sense if things were to end at Arsenal. Where can I be of any help? What do I want? Could I maybe return to Germany?’

‘I look at the perspectives for me and my family, and I think that I’ll intensify those thoughts from January on. That’s also the time when you can listen to other things when your contract is expiring.’

The 32-year-old will more than likely leave Arsenal as a free agent in the summer and looks likely to return to either Hannover or Werder Bremen, and as Hannover club director Martin Bader said, ‘anything can happen’.
