Player Ratings: Sunderland 1-4 Arsenal

Sunderland v Arsenal - Premier League

Arsenal travelled to Sunderland this weekend following their win over Reading in midweek. It was essential for the Gunners to get off to a good start after the frustrating draw with Middlesbrough, and that’s exactly what they did.

After a great cross from Chamberlain, Sanchez nodded the ball into the back of the net and got Arsenal going. Arsenal continued to dominate the game and looked a constant threat. The Gunners though didn’t capitalise on their clear dominance, allowing Sunderland to stay in the game, 0-0 at half-time.

After some poor defending from Mustafi, Sunderland were given a penalty which Defoe smashed into the back of the net to make it 1-1. This only seemed to spur Arsenal on though, as they quickly scored four goals, two from substitute, Olivier Giroud. Arsenal finished the game , 4-1 winners and rightly so.

Let’s have a look at the ratings for the players:

Petr Cech: 7/10

Apart from Defoe penalty, Cech didn’t have much to do for most of the game. A quiet day.

Hector Bellerin: 7.5/10

A good game for the Spaniard, he got forward well and looked solid in defence.

Shkodran Mustafi: 7/10

The new signing has just started to make a few mistakes over the last few weeks and this week he made another. After misjudging the flight of the ball, the German international allowed Defoe to go straight in goal which resulted in a penalty.

Laurent Koscielny: 8/10

Another solid game from Koscielny. No mistakes and led by example again.

Kieran Gibbs: 8.5/10

After today’s performance, Gibbs could well start again next week. The England international was very solid at the back and provided width going forward. He seems rejuvenated.

Mohamed Elneny: 7.5/10

A solid day or the Egyptian. He looked very solid Coquelin next to him.

Francis Coquelin: 7.5/10

Solid and reliable, Coquelin provided his usual steel in midfield.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain: 8/10

Although hee should’ve scored two goals, Oxlade-Chamberlain put in a much improved performance. He provided the assist for Sanchez’s first goal with a beautiful ball. Walcott might have a hard time getting back into the team.

Arsenal v Reading - EFL Cup Fourth Round

Mesut Ozil: 7.5/10

If the finishing were better, Ozil could’ve had few more assists. He provides a creative outlet in a fluid attack.

Alex Iwobi: 7/10

A tough game for the youngster, Iwobi looks a bit tired and slightly out of form.

Alexis Sanchez: 9/10

An outstanding game for the Chilean. In a porous Sunderland defence, Sanchez was a constant threat, not only in terms of scoring but also in providing assists – a complete performance.

Olivier Giroud: 9/10

What a return for the Frenchman, two touches, two goals. He came off the bench and made an instant impact, effectively killing the game for Arsenal.

Aaron Ramey: 6/10

Also made his return but didn’t quite have the impact like Giroud.

Ainsley Maitland-Niles: 6/10

Came on late but didn’t really do much.
