Southampton produced an exemplary performance to knock Arsenal out of the Quarter-finals of the EFL Cup 2-0 at the Emirates on Wednesday night.
First-half goals from Jordi Clasie and Ryan Bertrand were enough, as the Saints dominated the game from start to finish to progress to the Semi-finals of the EFL Cup. Jordi Clasie opened the scoring, hammering a rocket from inside the box after great wing play from record signing Sofiane Boufal. Bertrand increased Southampton’s lead when Boufal once again caused Carl Jenkinson all sorts of problems down the right to cross for Bertrand to guide into the bottom right-hand corner.
Arsenal’s best chance came in the second-half when Ainsley Maitland-Niles crossed for Kieran Gibbs who headed back to Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain to rifle over. A very poor performance from the Gunners on the night. Let’s take a look at the player ratings…
Emiliano Martinez: 6/10
Nothing the Argentine could do about the goals and should’ve conceded more if not for better Southampton finishing. A tough night for the young ‘keeper, a night he might want to forget especially if he is supposed to be Arsenal’s future first-team goalkeeper.
Carl Jenkinson: 1/10
Awful, how he has become a professional footballer I will never know. It looked like he won a competition on the back of a cereal box to play tonight. He was torn apart time and time again by Boufal. His career for Arsenal seems to be coming to an end, the young fullback just isn’t good enough to play for the club.
Played alright, however, couldn’t deal with Southampton’s midfielders who broke into the box and whenever they wanted. In fairness, he didn’t receive much help from the midfielders ahead of him.
Rob Holding: 6/10
Couldn’t stop the creativity of the Southampton midfielders, however, he could have prevented the second goal along with his defensive colleagues with better closing down. Not his best game for Arsenal.
Kieran Gibbs: 6/10
Most, if not all of Southampton’s play came down Arsenals right, Gibbs was solid enough, however, he never got forward enough to cause any problems.
Mohamed Elneny: 4/10
Shocking play from Elneny, he was overrun and dominated by a well drilled Southampton midfield, couldn’t stop supply to the Southampton forwards. He came off early for Xhaka, the Swiss international should’ve probably started ahead of Elneny, another poor performance for the Egyptian.
Francis Coquelin: 4/10
Combative at best tonight, otherwise, like Elneny, he couldn’t stop Southampton’s midfield. Southampton could’ve scored more than just the two goals tonight. Coquelin has looked poor for a few games now, so he’s going to have to step it up if he wants to cement a starting place.
Jeff Reine-Adelaide: 5/10
Does well to get past players but ends up losing the ball taking too much time. Cant be too harsh on the youngster, as he was up against a strong Southampton defence. He doesn’t seem to be comfortable on the wing and would probably be more comfortable in the middle of the park. a bad performance but there’s still more to come from him.
Alex Iwobi: 6.5/10
By far Arsenal’s best player, was creating openings for Arsenal, when they had the chance to, and he was brilliant at dribbling past players. Iwobi seems to be on his way to being back to his best
Aaron Ramsey: 4/10
Considering he was playing in his best position, he should’ve done better in terms of performance put in. The Welshman was anonymous at best and didn’t create any notable chances. In his current form, Ramsey does not deserve to be in Arsenal’s starting XI. A very poor night for the Welshman, he doesn’t look anywhere close to his best.
Lucas Perez: 5/10
Didn’t get the service he required to make a considerable impact tonight. He did have some nice touches and a few good shots, otherwise, it was a bad performance, much like many of the other Arsenal players.
