Arsène Wenger confirmed earlier that Arsenal have triggered captain Per Mertesacker’s one-year contract extension.
The ex-Germany international picked up an injury during pre-season and has since not managed to play a game for the club so far this season. Mertesacker’s contract was due to run out this summer but Arsenal have activated a clause in his contract that extends his deal by an extra year.
Wenger also confirmed that Mertesacker had returned to training but is still a few weeks out from full fitness.
“He is back in training, not with the squad but I think he is a few weeks away.”
“With the number of games we have it’s important that we have all our experienced players back and that everybody is focused to do well.”
‘We’re going through a moment of truth now, January until May is five months to go. You want ideally all your players with big experience back in your squad.”
