Arsene Wenger: Luis Suarez did agree to join Arsenal
|In an interview with beIN Sports Arsene Wenger has spoken out about the Luis Suarez transfer saga, revealing that the Uruguayan had agreed to join Arsenal.
The Gunners tried to sign Liverpool’s prized possession Suarez back in 2013, famously making a £40,00,001 bid to activate the striker’s release clause. As well as inviting a lot of criticism from the fans and media, the offer led to the Reds’ owner John Henry tweeting, “What are they smoking over there at The Emirates?”.
Wenger, though, has revealed that the Barcelona forward had an agreement in place and was all set to be a Gunner.
“He was very close (to signing for Arsenal). We had an agreement with the player. We had been wrongly advised that he had a clause, with a minimal clause, but we had an agreement with the player. You can ask him.”
“I’m convinced he wanted to join us and then they sold him. They kept him one more year, improved his contract and promised to sell him the year later to a club abroad.”
