What can Thomas Lemar offer Arsenal?

Arsenal’s players return to pre-season training in early July as they begin their build-up for a pivotal 2017-18 Premier League campaign. The Gunners look likely to enter the transfer market with a number of top players from around Europe linked with the North London club including Monaco’s Thomas Lemar. Can the £26 million man improve Arsene Wenger’s side next season?

Arsenal fans were divided once again when Arsene Wenger signed a new two-year contract at the end of May. The Frenchman has come under heavy criticism from some sections of the Emirates who believe he should be replaced. Nevertheless, the 67-year-old has drawn up his list of transfer targets this summer which is believed to include Riyad Mahrez, Thomas Lemar, Kylian Mbappé and Alexandre Lacazette.

Lemar had a terrific season in Ligue 1, helping his club secure the title and reach the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League. The 21-year-old scored 12 times last season and has already endeared himself to Arsenal supporters with two goals against Spurs in the Group Stages of the competition.

The North London club have already added Sead Kolasinac from Schalke and are looking to bolster their squad with further additions before the start of the new season on August 12th.

The explosive playmaker was mainly stationed on the left-hand side of midfield for Monaco and would be likely to compete with Alex Iwobi in a similar position should he successfully complete his move to the Emirates. He is also happy playing through the middle and whilst he isn’t physically commanding, he is skilful, pacy and is capable of the unpredictable. He created 72 chances for his side last season and claimed ten assists during the regular campaign. How Arsene Wenger could do with adding those kind of statistics to his side!

Despite a number of seemingly exciting additions in the pipeline, the club must ensure it ties down some of its existing key players to longer contracts. Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez enter the final year of their existing deals and their futures remain unresolved.

Sanchez hasn’t had much time to consider his next move as he’s been busy representing his country in the Confederations Cup in Russia where his recent strike secured a 1-1 draw against Germany. Chile have been priced up as third favourites to lift the trophy and there are regular football updates and previews available on the summer tournament.

Whilst Lemar will be a welcome addition to the club many fans insist their side require a top quality striker and commanding centre-half in order to compete at the highest level. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is another player who could leave the Emirates this summer whilst rumours of Kylian Mbappe’s arrival do appear wide of the mark.

Lemar would relish the chance to play in the Premier League and Arsenal appear to be the perfect fit. He is young, skilful and crucially, rarely wastes possession. News of the club lodging a second bid will excite Gunner’s fans as the new season draws ever closer.
