‘Ruining every attack,’ some Arsenal fans slam 30-year-old’s display vs Newcastle United
|A selection of Arsenal fans have expressed their disappointment over the performance of Henrikh Mkhitaryan during the club’s 1-0 win over Newcastle United in the Premier League opener.
The Armenia international has struggled to find the consistency in his performances since making the move to the club last year, and this has drawn criticism from a large section of the supporters.
On Sunday, the 30-year-old was handed with a start against Magpies with the likes of Nicolas Pepe and Alexandre Lacazette struggling with their fitness, but his showing was largely average without any impact.
Barring the impressive reverse ball for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s goalscoring attempt in the first half, Mkhitaryan lost possession as many as 15 times, as per Squawka, and his performance did not improve in the second period despite playing until the 84th minute.
As such, many Arsenal fans have been angered by the attacker’s performance for not the first time, and a few have taken to Twitter to express their views on the same.
Twitter Reactions:
Gunners boss Unai Emery was forced to play with a weakened starting lineup against Steve Bruce’s side with a number of senior players either short of fitness or absent for the league’s curtain-raiser.
Owing to this, chances were few during the course of the game but Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang managed to find the breakthrough before the hour mark after converting from a brilliant defence-splitting cross from Ainsley Maitland-Niles from the right flank.
With the result, the Gunners managed to secure a win with a shutout for the first time since the 2008/09 season. The result also equaled their clean sheet tally away from home for the entire 2018/19 campaign (1).
