Arsenal have received a potential fitness boost with both Granit Xhaka and Mesut Ozil returning to training ahead of the Premier League clash against Liverpool this weekend.

Ozil and Xhaka missed the recent league encounter against Burnley due to an illness and injury (lower back and leg) respectively, but they have reported to training in the lead up to the weekend game.

In a series of pictures released on the Gunners’ official website, it is visible that the duo have gone through the training session with their teammates and this should put them in contention for the Merseyside trip.

Ozil has barely participated for the Gunners in training this month and this has largely resulted from the security investigation related to the attempt car-jacking incident where Sead Kolasinac was also present.

The former Germany international did return for the training sessions ahead of the Clarets game last week, but his involvement was always in doubt after Unai Emery acknowledged that he had just recovered from an illness.

As such, Ozil may have to settle for a bench role against Liverpool at best, considering Dani Ceballos has certainly earned the right to start the game in the attacking midfield role after contributing two assists in a man of the match performance against Burnley on his home league debut.

On the other hand, Xhaka has been more of a regular for the team, barring the absence last week and the Switzerland international should return to the first XI, provided he has completely overcome the minor injury setback.

Joe Willock and Matteo Guendouzi started in the centre of the park last weekend and the former seems the likely candidate to drop to the bench, if Emery decides to field the Swiss, who is currently deemed the club captain after the summer departure of Laurent Koscielny.
