Former Arsenal star-turned-pundit Paul Merson has backed the Gunners to secure a comfortable win over Tottenham Hotspur during the forthcoming north London derby at the Emirates Stadium.
Unai Emery’s side have started the season in a relatively good fashion and they were able to register wins over Newcastle United and Burnley before being outclassed by Liverpool at Anfield last weekend.
On the other hand, Spurs have accumulated just four points on the board when compared to the Gunners’ six, and they recently suffered a shock 1-0 home defeat at the hands of Steve Bruce’s Magpies.
Speaking on Sky Sports, Merson has now said that the Gunners are in a much better position when compared to their cross-town rivals and they should secure a comfortable 4-1 triumph in the derby on Sunday.
“I think Arsenal will win quite comfortably, 4-1. I think they’ll rip them to shreds. I think Tottenham are struggling at the moment,” he told.
Arsenal have not entirely dominated the derby at the Emirates over the past few years and they have managed just two wins and three draws from the previous five Premier League meetings.
Nonetheless, the previous campaign was a positive as they were able to register a 4-2 win with a terrific second half performance and that should be taken as the motivation factor ahead of the derby.
Gunners boss Unai Emery went with a slightly defensive formation against Liverpool, where he choose to play with three central midfielders, but the Spaniard may revert to the traditional 4-2-3-1 setup for the weekend.
Alexandre Lacazette was a surprise exclusion from the starting XI and the Frenchman should return to the fray. It remains to be seen whether he will be supported by both Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Nicolas Pepe in the wider attacking roles.
