‘Only one to blame’, some Arsenal fans slam experienced star after Watford draw

A section of the Arsenal fans have slammed the performance of defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos following the 2-2 draw against Watford at Vicarage Road.

The hosts started the game as the better side but the Gunners pounced on their defensive mistakes to score two goals via Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang before the break.

However, Unai Emery’s side simply failed to show up in the second half and the constant Hornets pressure contributed to defensive mistakes from both Sokratis and David Luiz.

Sokratis gifted the Hornets with their opening goal after squandering possession to Gerard Deulofeu in the Gunners’ box, which allowed Tom Cleverley to find the net seconds later.

Thereafter, Luiz was guilty of conceding a reckless penalty with around 12 minutes to play and Roberto Pereyra did not make any mistake in converting the spot kick past Bernd Leno.

Following the game, a section of the supporters were unimpressed with the displays of both defenders but a few of them pointed the blame on Sokratis, who gave the Hornets with the momentum through his blunder.

Here are some of the reactions…

Both Luiz and Sokratis were culpable for the disappointing draw on the road, but the former somewhat redeemed himself after making a crucial block on Tom Cleverley’s shot, which would have sealed a comeback win for the Hornets.

Gunners boss Unai Emery has Calum Chambers, Shkodran Mustafi and Rob Holding at his disposal, should he require to make a central defensive change, and it won’t be surprising, if one or two of those players feature during the midweek Europa League opener against Eintracht Frankfurt.
