Former Arsenal vice-chairman David Dein has said that the Gunners should be aiming for the top two places in the Premier League under manager Unai Emery.

The north London side have made a mixed beginning to the current campaign but they are presently in the third spot with a one-point deficit to Manchester City ahead of them.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Dein, who was with the club between 1983 and 2007, said that the Gunners should not be satisfied with making the top four and they should aim much higher.

“I’ve never subscribed to that [aiming for the top four]. I’ve always felt Arsenal had to be challenging for at least first or second in the league every year. That has to be the ambition at the start of the season.” he told.

Meanwhile, the former Gunners chief continued to state that the club are currently going through a rebuilding process under Emery and can’t expect instant success.

“I think it’s a work in progress. We have to patient. It’s not easy today as everyone expects instant success, and you can see what has happened to other clubs around us,” he continued.

Arsenal have succumbed to just one league defeat at the hands of leaders Liverpool but they are already nine points behind the Reds after dropping points in the form of three draws.

A Premier League title challenge remains unrealistic with the frailties in the defensive department and the focus will surely lie on securing Champions League football after missing out in the past three campaigns.

The Gunners went into the international break on the back of a close 1-0 Premier League win over Bournemouth at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

David Luiz scored his maiden goal for the club to secure the three points but the likes of Calum Chambers and Matteo Guendouzi were equally responsible for the win after making some last ditch interceptions.

Chambers, in particular, came up with two key blocks to deny the Cherries and he was named the man of the match by the fans. Arsenal are scheduled to face Sheffield United on the road in their next league game on October 21.
