Arsenal’s head of football Raul Sanllehi has stated that the club expect manager Unai Emery to deliver the minimum of Champions League qualification after backing him in the transfer market over the summer.
The Gunners pursued six players during the recent summer transfer window and Nicolas Pepe was the most high-profile signing as he made the move from Lille on a club-record deal.
Speaking at the Arsenal Fan Forum last night, Sanllehi was asked about the expectations for the campaign and the Gunners chief was clear to state that the club expect Emery to secure Champions League qualification.
“We said to Unai that we just missed out on qualifying for the CL last year, but this year with a stronger squad, we expect you to do that,” he was quoted as saying by The Mirror.
The Gunners were in a strong position to make the top four during the final weeks of the previous campaign but a poor run of form from April saw them miss out on the objective by the single point.
Unai Emery’s side had a second chance to qualify for the Champions League through the Europa League final but that was not meant to be after a rather embarrassing 4-1 loss at the hands of Chelsea in Baku.
With Sanllehi’s message, it is quite clear that Emery needs to meet the requirement of Champions League football this term and that may decide his position beyond the current campaign.
The Spanish tactician presently has a contract which expires at the end of the season but the Gunners have the option to extend the deal for another 12 months.
